Journal Reflection Week # 7

For my observations, I chose to observe a young lady while I was at work. She was
sitting in the Pit of the North Campus with a large group of her friends. I didnt
observe too many expressions since her gestures were so animated and
pronounced. The first gesture I noticed was her aggressive hand waving and what
appeared to be finger snapping near someones face in the group of friends she sat
with. For that, I assumed she was probably having an argument or debate with her
group of friends and the topic appeared to be getting heated. The second gesture I
noticed was her holding her hand in the face of another group member and turning
her head away. That gesture reminded me of when I was a kid and people would do
that with the saying talk to the hand, so I assumed she didnt like what her friend
had said and wanted them to be quiet. The final gesture I noticed was her slamming
her hands onto the desk repeatedly when someone else said something, which
made me assume she didnt agree with what was being said and wanted the
attention back so she could speak. Overall, it ended up that I was right as the
situation became a lot more aggressive and security had to intervene but without
volume added to the conversation, I could have been completely wrong in my
assumptions and she could have just been a very animated person. I never realized
how important non-verbal communication could be.
