At UCBerkeley we are developing anew Wave Energy Converter tat is abe to efficiently harvest ths energy. The design was inspired by the ality of muddy seaffoors to effectively absorb ‘overpassing ocean wave within only 2 couple of wavelengths. Our design uses a synthele-seabed-carpet that is connected toa grid of generators underneath, that has the ability to extract wave energy the same way the muddy seafloor does. We successfully demonstrated its capability to absorb ‘and convert wave energy for mukiple sea states, The abity to cancel waves can be used to create safe zones inthe ocean, prevent erosion anc protect harbors. Secondly, the CWEC' primary energy conversion creates seawater at high pressure, This can be used to generate ectity, be used for desalination and fr the distribution of fresh water. High pressure wate can supply pumped-storage hydroclectre pawer plants, which ave the ‘most ecient way to balance the elecrkal ord Why Ocean Wave Energy? World-wide demand for eetrity is expected to double within the next 20 years and thus, one ofthe major engineering challenges ofthe 21st century sto meet the constantly increasing global energy demand, espedely on the coastlines, as migration is Ikely double the population inthis ‘ea by 2025. The ocean i a large relatively untapped renewable energy resource. The British Department of Trace and Industry has clamed that there are at leat 90 millon gigawatts of energy in wind criven waves alone worldwide. This may be compared tothe 15 thousands gigawatts of energy consumed worldwide, According to London-based Carbon Trust, wave energy can reatstcally provide over 2,000 terawats hours (TWh) of
