Add History Collection dialog (Advanced tab)

Use the Advanced tab to specify whether the data is continuous or manual and to set data
compression.
The dialog has the following fields and controls.
Parameter field path
Specify the parameter field in this module to sample by clicking the Browse button and
drilling down to a specific field.
Data Characteristic
Specify how the data is read.

Continuous - Data values are a continuous stream from the process.

Manually entered - Data values are entered by an operator. These values show up as
marks on the trend, they do not have interconnecting lines.

Data Compression
Enables data compression for the parameter being collected. You must also select a
deviation value and collection frequency when compression is enabled.
Data compression provides a trade-off, reducing the amount of disk storage for historical
data by reducing the resolution of the data being stored.
Data compression is ideal for values that do not need to be stored with extreme accuracy
and for values that change slowly but have some noise in the signal that can be ignored (for
example, a tank level, temperature, many flow rates).
Data compression with a deviation of 0 is ideal for values that do not change frequently (for
example, set points and discrete values) or for any item that requires every change to be
stored, regardless of how small a change. The compression algorithm also reduces disk
storage for values that change at a constant rate, since the algorithm compares each new
value to a straight line of any slope.
It is recommended that data compression be enabled for all values unless it is specifically
required that a data sample be stored each time the value is scanned. Otherwise, the
archive files will consume large quantities of disk space.
With compression enabled, the net result is a set of archived data that, when plotted,
guarantees that all of the originally sampled values occurred in the range defined by the
plotted line, plus and minus the deviation configured on this page.
Deviation (EU)
The Deviation (EU) field is the deviation, in engineering units, from the slope of the line
recorded in the historical data server.
It is recommended that you make the deviation as large as possible such that it will still
record sufficient detail for later viewing or analysis. Choosing too small a deviation for a
noisy signal may cause nearly every sampled data value to be stored, diminishing the
advantage of data compression. Moreover, data display is faster in Process History View for
values that are archived with higher compression values.
Required when data compression is enabled.
Collect at least every
Select the sampling period for the parameter value being collected. This sets the maximum
time between stored samples, even in values that very rarely change.
Required when data compression is enabled.
