Lessons 10: Literacy Night Read-O-Rama

Materials:
White or colored copy paper
Copy machine or printer
Paperclips
Brads
Pencils

Objective:
Families will attend Literacy Night to learn how to encourage and support literacy in
their homes on a daily basis.
Families will make take-home literacy activities to bolster literacy skills at home.

Procedure:

Print the Sign-in Sheet for Literacy Night. The sign-in sheet can be found
in the Additional Resources on pages 107-108.
Print the Parent Questionnaire/Survey for the end of the event. The Parent
Questionnaire/Survey can be found in the Additional Resources on page
109.
Print the Read-O-Rama fiction and non-fiction game boards.
Provide each family with two brads and two paperclips.
Model set-up and game:
o Demonstrate how to place the brad through the paperclip and
through the center of the game board to make a spinner.
o Model how to spin the paperclip as a spinner.
o Then show that when the paperclip stops, there is an activity for
their child to practice.
o There are both fiction and non-fiction game boards to provide
support for either kind of texts.
Ask parents to complete the Parent Questionnaire/Survey at the end of the
Literacy Night event.

Assessment:
Maintain a Parent Sign-In sheet for your records.
Give the Parent Exit Survey and reflect on the parent feedback.

necessary for future events.

Differentiation:

English/Spanish communication with parents through the materials and flier.


Parent friendly language is used to explain how to use literacy games in the
home.
