When Coach Bullock came to speak with us during class, he took a different approach
than the other guest speakers. Instead of him speaking first and educating us on the many things
that go into overseeing the weight room, he gave us the opportunity to do some research and split
us into four groups to discuss the following topics: Emergency procedures, Memberships/usage,
Facility policies, and Facility management. After we did our own research for about fifteen
minutes, we gave him our feedback one group at a time and discussed each topic. Starting with
emergency procedures, he told us that we essentially must be prepared for any type of situation
we could think of, for an example, medical emergencies, fire, tornado, lockdown (active
shooter), ventilation, etc. just to name a few. Secondly, when it comes to memberships and
persons we allow to use the facility at Emory, he explained that when he first got here there were
very loose restrictions; however, he soon boiled it down to students, faculty and staff, alums
(with a membership) and lastly honored guests such as Coach Wacker. Moving on to facility
policies, Coach Bullock uses a three-step method if people break rules. The first step is just a
simple warning, the second is suspension, and the third is expulsion. He also has students that
work in the weight room and they have a limit of hours they can work for their shift.
Furthermore, when he first came here he said several people had access to the weight room and
had their own keys, but he quickly changed that to him being the only holder of a key to the
weight room. Lastly, we talked about facility management, he said they do a preventative

biannual to make sure nothing is broken, and they clean often to minimize growth of bacteria to
keep people from getting sick. A key point he emphasized was that there be supervision of the
weight room at all times and he also mentioned certain rules to followed for safety reasons, such
as, wearing appropriate attire, always have a spotter, using one set of dumbbells at a time, etc.
