Review:
The purpose of the book is to demonstrate how immigrants face the struggles of adapting
to their new home in a different country. The author starts the story when the little boy, Kofi,
wakes up and then takes the reader on a journey through the night. Kurtz has also written
more childrens books. Another book that Kurtz wrote regarding immigration was Faraway
Home. These two books have share the same topic but tell a different story. Furthermore,
Kurtz tells a good story, young readers will enjoy because they can probably relate to a bad
night they might have experience. The author also provides children with insights into their
own problems, by mentioning how the little boy was comforted by his sisters story. The
illustrations are unique because the reader can see their Kofis fear through the pictures. The
illustrations suggest the warmth of Abena of trying to make the situation better for Kofi. The
illustrator also uses dark colors at the beginning of the story to emphasis fear in the night.
Additionally, the author targets young reader ranging in between four to eight years-old.
