Quiz # 9:

Crown Gear Assembly

1.

2. The crown Gear is a type of gear that has teeth that are raised at an angle (usually right angle) on
one side and rounded off on the other. It is useful when the shafts to be turned meet at an angle. Even
though crown gears could be meshed to spurs and worm gears, they do not mesh well with other crown
gears.
In the assembly picture above, we go from an 8t spur to a 24t crown gear and finally a 24ft spur gear. The
gear ratio in this case will be the gear ratio between the 8t spur gear and 24t crown gear multiply by the
gear ratio between the 24t crown gear and the 24t spur gear. We therefore have
Gear ratio= 24:8 x 24:24 = 3:1 x 1:1 = 3:1.
We can see that in the specific assembly in picture above, the crown is used to slow down the rotation
and change the rotation direction from the input at the 8t spur gear to the output at the 24t spur gear.

Torque:
the same force is applied to the teeth of all the gears that are part of the assembly. the torque on a gear is
given by the formula t = f*r. since f is constant throughout the assembly, we can conclude that the output

torque on the assembly will be greater than the input torque since the radius of the output gear is greater
than the radius of gear at input.

Speed:
When gears are meshed, the angular velocity is proportional to the velocity of the teeth of the gears and
inversely proportional to the radius of the gears. We have the formula = v / r. since the velocity stays
the same throughout the assembly, we can conclude that the angular velocity will decrease with the
increasing radius. In our assembly, the output shaft will have a slower angular velocity than the input shaft
since the output gear is larger than the input gear.

One of the advantage of our assembly is the fact that we can transfer rotation from a vertical plane to a
horizontal plane using a crown gear. Another advantage is the increase in torque at the output shaft.
One of the disadvantages of our assembly is the fact that gear spacing and the assembly structure
become more complicated because the crown gear is in a different plane from the input and output shafts.

3. the mechanical assembly pictured above is commonly used in car transmissions. It is used to increase
torque while reducing speed.
