Abstract: The aim of this paper is to describe briefly the sociolinguistic situation of
nineteenth-century Greece by focusing on the social functions of both katharevousa
and demotiki. It will be argued that Greece in the nineteenth century could be seen
as an example of linguistic culture (according to H. Schiffmans definition of this
term) in which written tradition and language were considered to be superior to oral
culture and language. This superiority justified the use of katharevousa.

Schiffman :
Speech communities have belief systems about their languages origin,
myths, beliefs about good and bad languages, taboos, shibboleths, and so
on. These beliefs are part of the social conditions that affect the maintenance
and transmission of that language. Thus the fact that a language is diglossic is
actually a feature of the linguistic culture of that area where this language is
used, rather than of the language per se. (Schiffman 1997: 211)
