Unit Plan Rationale

I am going to teach students about the early ancient river valley civilizations, ancient
China, ancient Egypt, ancient Greece and Rome, and ancient Mesopotamia, and the religions and
cultures that were established in the United States because of immigration from these ancient
civilizations. I think students learning about ancient history and different cultures and religions
of the world is important because of the importance of, and emergence of, school diversity. The
immigrant students and their families bring their own history, cultures, and religions that we
should be open to understanding these differences and informing ourselves and learning about
these differences. This fosters the emerging popular school concept of culturally responsive
teaching and implementing it in the school environment of our growing diverse classrooms and
schools. It is important for todays students, and parents, to learn how to become tolerant and
accepting of the different cultures and religions that we are certain to encounter in our daily lives.
This helps students to develop their own sense of tolerance and acceptance. Educating students
about different cultures and characteristics and the characteristics of different religions through
activities that relate to the language of the standards clarifying objectives is how I will connect
the concepts.
