Theories of International Relations
Thesis Statement: In Realism, how actors react depends on factors that cause an event. For
Thucydides and Carr, actors must distinguish between the immediate versus the underlying
causes. This changes to the use of strategy and war for both Machiavelli and Clausewitz.
However, Hobbes, Grotius & Morgenthau also believed in balance between authority and
cooperation of actors, and not just an abrupt negative action towards the other actors.
