It is important when using your Snow Thrower that certain precautions be taken to prevent injury or damage. Please read the following list of precautions before you assemble or use your new Snow Thrower. 1. Read the Owner's Manual carefully. Be sure you know the controls and the proper use of the snow thrower. Know how to stop the snow thrower and engine quickly. 2. Wear safety glasses or eye shields when: or using snow thrower 3. Exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide which is odorless and deadly poisonous. Do not clear snow across the face of slopes. Use extreme caution when changing direction on slopes. Do not try to clear steep slopes. Never use snow thrower without guards, plates or other safety protective devices in place. Figure 1 shows the Snow Thrower completely assembled, Instructions refer to right or left hand as you face the snow thrower from operator position. NOTE: Assembly will be easier with the assistance of a second person. Nuts used to attach lower end of handles are attachedto inside of side frame, 1. Place a handle spacer (figure 2) inside lower end of right handle and align slots in spacer with holes in handle. 2. Attach right handle to right side of snow thrower, as shown in figure 2, with two 5/16 x2 inch hex head screws, two 5/16 inch spiit lockwashers and two formed washers. NOTE: Nuts for handle mounting screws are attached to inside of snow thrower side frame (at top two of three square holes. 3, Tighten screws securely, 4, Repeat steps 1 and 2 for left handle, NOTE: Tighten serews in left handle finger tight only. < Zz las RIGHT SIDE FRAME. RIGHT HANDLE FORMED WASHER a iit Seb Zo 5/16 INCH SPLIT LOCKWASHER, CONTROLS ASSEMBLY 1, With the assistance of another person, attach control panel to handles with four 6/16 x 1% inch screws, four formed washers and four 8/16 inch locknuts as shown in figure 3. 2, Tighten screws in lower end of left handle and contro! panel 3. Attach impeller/auger drive control lever (other end of cable is attached on right side of snow thrower below gas tank) to control panel as shown in figures 3 & 4 by: ‘A. Insert lever up through slot in right side of contro! panel. BB, Attach with two No. 10 x % inch hex washer head screws and two No. 10 locknuts. NOTE: Before tightening screws and locknuts, check to make sure that lever does not rub side of slot in control panel CC. Push knob onto impeller/auger drive contro! ever. NOTE: ‘If knob should need to be removed, see Control Knob Removal paragraph in Maintenance section of this manual. 4. A power clutch cable is attached under belt cover in front of engine. Cable should wrap around left side of engine HANDLE SPACER - = A FORMED er ee gta Aaa fe a ee saesiae sania oxo. ‘and under carburetor. Attach cable by: ‘A. Remove top nut from threaded end of cable and: cable through slot in lower edge of control panel B. Push threaded end of cable up through hole in ‘control panel and reinstall, but do not tighten, top rut. C. Pull up on power clutch cable and place hook end into hole in power clutch lever (figure 4). NOTE: ‘may be necessary to loosen bottom nut on cable to lengthen cable enough to hook into power clutch lever. D. Tighten bottom nut on power clutch cable until cable stop figure 4) just clears top end of threaded portion of cable. Tighten top nut to comple assembly. POWER CLUTCH CABLE 5. Attach upper chute control rod and upper chute control ‘0d bracket (mounted on rod) to bottom side of left handle (figure 5) with two 5/16 x 1% inch hex head screws, two 55/16 inch locknuts, and two formed washers. 6. Hook lower end of upper chute control rod into pivot block (attached to lower chute control rod) and secure with a Yax 1% ineh cotterpin, NOTE: Cotterpins that attach upper ‘and lower chute control rods to pivot block must be bent tight ‘around rod ends so that they do not interfere with pivoting ‘action of pivot block FORMED WASHER & srrementocxnur MME (cn Sone 7. Check sprocket end of chute control rod to make sure teeth on sprocket fully engages holes in flange around bottom of discharge chute. if adjustment is necessary, simply loosen screws attaching lower chute control rod bracket to main frame and slide bracket up or down until teeth on sprocket fully engages holes in flange. 8. Attach upper wheel drive control rod to lower wheel drive control rod as follows: ‘A. Attach upper and lower rod ends with a 5/16 x% inch screw and 5/16 inch locknut as shown in figure 6 and tighten securely. B. Place wheel drive control lever in neutral “N” position as shown in figure 6 inset. ©. Check to make sure unit is in neutral by lifting wheels off ground and spinning wheels with your foot. Wheels will not spin if transmission is not in ‘neutral. If transmission is in neutral, make sure Screws in retaining bracket (figure 4) are tight. Move wheel drive control lever until in neutral (by spinning wheels paragraph C above). E. Loosen screws in retaining bracket (figure 4) on top tend of wheel drive control lever (under control panel), NOTE: These screws may have been left Toose at time of manufacture, F. Move bracket and rod left or right until itis in neutral “N” position as shown in figure 6 inset. Retighten loosened screws securely. G. [UPPER WHEEL ORIVE CONTROL ROD i 77A\ tower wueet oaIvE conTROL ROD 3/4 NCH SCREW | sane,] hy oO 5/16 INCH LocKNUT DRIFT BREAKER BARS INSTALLATION ‘This snow thrower is equipped with two drift breaker bars that can be installed on top outsides of auger housing 1M you seldom have drifts that are deeper than the auger housing, you may prefer to leave these bars uninstalled until ‘a need arises. If you do not install these bars now. fasten them together with the four carriage bolts and locknuts provided and store them where they can be found when heeded. To install bars 1. Attach a bar to each end of auger housing with two 5/16 x'% inch carriage bolts (from inside of housing out) and ‘two 5/16 inch locknuts as shown in figure 7. NOTE: Install bars so that bent edge is toward front of snow thrower and bends outward, SG cn e168 tocxnut INCH CARRIAGE BOLT. A CAUTION A For packing purposes, the gage wheels on this snow thrower may have been adjusted all the way up to lowest height position. Adjust height as instructed below before using snow thrower. SKID and GAGE WHEEL (Height) ADJUSTMENT This snow thrower is equipped with a pair of skids mounted ‘on the back side of the auger housing and a pair of gage ‘wheels located on the outside of the auger housing. Both the skids and gage wheels are used to elevate the front of the ‘snow thrower up to 1 inch. Figure 8 shows both parts. NOTE: Before changing height, be sure both tires are inflated equally. Recommended tire pressure is 20 pounds. When removing snow from hard surface area such as paved driveway or sidewalk, we suggest use of gage wheels only, to, elevate front of snow thrower to desired height. To change height of gage wheels: 1. Stop engine, remove key, disconnect spark plug wi ‘and tie wire away from plug. 2. Remove locknut on shoulder bolt through gage whee! (figure 8) 3. Relocate shoulder bolt into hole representing des height and reinstall locknut. ed 4, Set gage wheel on other side at same height. 5. If skids interfere, loosen, pull up and tighten skids to full UP position after gage wheels have been set. 6. Reconnect spark plug wire, When removing snow from rock or unpaved construction, we suggest you raise the front of the snow thrower with the skids. To raise the snow thrower with the skids: 1. Stop engine, remove key, disconnect spark plug wire ‘and tie wire away from plug. 2. Loosen the skid mounting nuts (figure 8) and push the ‘skid down until the front of the snow thrower is raised to desired height. Retighten mounting nuts. = 3. Set skid on other side at same height. Return snow thrower to operating position. cross cHalw \ SIDE CHAIN, LOCKING LINK * OPERATION The operation of this snow thrower can result in foreign ‘objects being thrown into the eyes, which can result in severe eye damage. Always wear safety glasses or eye shields while operating snow thrower. We recommend Wide Vision B Safety Mask for over spectacles. or standard safety glasses, available at SEARS Retail or Catalog Stores. Get to know your snow thrower and its controls. Be sure you (or any other operator) have read and understood the Operational Precautions listed on page 3 of this manual OPERATING CONTROLS Operating controls (figures 10 & 11) and their functions are 8 follows: ‘© Power Clutch Lever - The power clutch lever controls forward or reverse motion of the snow thrower when the ‘wheel drive control lever is in the appropriate position When the operator's hand is removed from the power clutch lever, tension is removed from drive belts, therefore snow thrower motion and impeller/auge rotation stop. Engage slowly but firmly and all the way down against hand grip. NOTE: Power clutch lever must be released before changing impeller/auger or whee! drive control levers, ‘© Impeller/ Auger Drive Control Lever - Used todisengage ower to impeller/auger without interfering with power ‘to drive wheels. Pull backwards to engage position. Push forward to off position. NOTE: Power clutch lever must be in released (off) position before impeller/auger lever position is changed. © Whee! Home ven STARTER sunomn prTON Le 's ‘CONTROL LEVER ‘Swiren PRE-USE CHECK OF CONTROLS Al controls should be checked for proper function before ‘servicing or starting the engine. 1. Check chute control rod for proper function (see Step 7 in paragraph Controls Assembly). 2. Check wheel drive contra! lever for proper position (see: Wheel Drive Control Adjustment paragraph in Adjustment Section of this manual). 3. Check power clutch lever for proper function. Adjust cable if necessary (see Power Clutch Cable Adjustment paragraph in Adjustment section of this manual) 4. Check impeller/auger control lever for proper function. ‘Adjust cable length if necessary (see Impeller/Auger Control Cable Adjustment paragraph in Adjustment section of this manual) 5. After servicing engine and before beginning snow ‘removal, check controls again with engine running. f wheel drive or impeller/auger controls do not seem to function properly, check drive belts and belt guides for proper adjustment (see Drive Belt Adjustment paragraph. in Adjustment section of this manual). TO SERVICE ENGINE ‘The engine on this snow thrower was shipped with NO OIL. Oil must be added before engine is started. 1.Remove oil fill cap/dipstick (figure 11) and fill crank- cease to FULL line on dipstick (about 114 pints) with Sears S.AE. 10W-30 motor oil (or equivalent). Do not overfill: Tighten fill cap/dipstick securely each time you check oil level. NOTE: Sears S.A.E, SW-20 or SW-40 motor oil (or equivalent) may be substituted in areas where temperature is consistently 20° F. or lower. 2. Reinstall oil fill cap/dipstick and make sure it is properly installed and tight, 3. Always check oil level before each starting of engine and after each § hours of continuous use. Add ol required. Low-lead or regular gasoline is an accept able substitute. NOTE: Do not use Ethyl, high octane ga: oline or Gasohol. Be certain container isclean and ree from ‘ust or other foreign particles. Never use gasoline that may be stale from long periods of storage in the container. CAUTION: DO NOT use gasoline containing any amount of alcohol as it can cause serious damage or significantly reduce performance. A DANGER A ‘Never fill the gas tank while engine is running ois, hot. Immediately wipe off any spilled gasoline before attempting to start engine. 7. Check oil level in gear case by removing auger gear case ol level fill plug (igure 10). Oil shouldbe visible in hole. HH not, insert @ funnel that has an adjustable neck and add SEARS SAE. 30 (or equivalent) engine oil until it starts to run out of hole. Reinstall plug and tighten securely. 8. Check to make sure that spark plug is tightened securely into engine and spark plug wire is attached to spark plug. if torque wrench is available, torque plug to 15 foot pounds. A DANGER A Never run engine indoors or in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas. Engine exhaust contains CARBON, MONOXIDE, an ODORLESS and DEADLY GAS. Koop hands, feet, hair and loose clothing away from ‘any moving parts on engine and snow thrower. WARNING - Temperature of muffler and nearby areas may exceed 150° F. Avoid these areas. TO START ENGINE Bo sure that engine has sufficient oil The snow thrower engine is equipped with a recoil starter. The operation of this engine is controlled by the throttle control lever (figure 11), Before starting the engine, be certain that you have read and followed all the instructions fn the preceding pages. Move choke lever (igure 11) to FULL CHOKE position NOTE: Do not choke @ warm engine, 6. Push primer button (figure 11) 2 times. NOTE: Do not prime @ warm engine, 7. Pull starter handle (figure 11) rapidly. NOTE: Do not allow starter handle to snap back but rewind slowly while keeping a firm hold of starter handle. 8. As engine warms up and begins to operate evenly, move choke lever slowly to OFF position. if engine falters, return to % choke until it runs smoothly, then move to OFF ‘choke position, NOTE: Allow the engine to warm up for a few minutes as the engine will not develop full power untilit reaches operating temperature. 9. Run engine at or near top speed. NOTE: To help prevent possible freeze-up of rewind starter, proceed as. follows alter each snow blowing job: A. With engine not running, wipe all snow and moisture from carburetor cover in area of control levers. Also move control levers backward and forward several times.
