Legislature to vote on extending hotel bed tax
ALBANY (Nov. 30, 2016) - The leaders of the Albany County Legislature thank Gov. Andrew Cuomo and their state representatives for working to extend the countys hotel bed tax through 2018. Gov. Cuomo approved the countys ability to levy the six percent occupancy tax for another two years this week, when he signed legislation sponsored by Assemblyman John T. McDonald III (D-Cohoes) and Sen. Neil D. Breslin (D-Bethlehem). The revenue will fund the Albany Convention Center opening in the city in March, modernizations to the Times Union Center and more. Also contributing to the bills success were Assembly Speaker Carl E. Heastie (D-Bronx), Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy (D-Albany), Assemblyman Phil Steck (D-Colonie) and Sen. George A. Amedore Jr. (R-Rotterdam). This was a real team effort, Albany County Legislature Chairman Sean Ward said. Were thankful to have such great advocates at the state level. The Albany County Legislature will vote to continue the tax when it meets Monday evening, Majority Leader Frank Commisso of the Albany County Legislature said. Were thankful our state representatives pushed for this important funding, and the governor signed it, Commisso said.
