Classroom: Ms.

G
Grade: 3rd
Curriculum Area: Social Studies
What I notice
Ms G. Starts off with the main Idea
question asking students What is
Geography? Students are starting to
focus on their yearly country, which is
Asia in 3rd Grade.
Ms. G conducts a short lesson on the 5
themes of Geography Location, Region,
Place, Movement, and HumanEnvironment Interaction.
She also does a short lesson on how to
use resources like an atlas to help
navigate geography.
Ms. G also goes over terms like
Latitude/longitude, Relative Location,
Climate, culture, languages, religion,
economy, landforms etc.

*I thought Ms. G. did a great job

covering and explaining each term that
students needed to learn in order to
complete their 5 themes of Geography
worksheet.

After direct instruction, students are

given a worksheet to fill out which has
questions that correlate with this lesson.
Students are asked to pick a country in
Asia to research on to answer the
questions on their worksheet. Students
use their personal laptops to look up
answers on Kid-Rex and Culture Grams.
During this activity a lot of students had
many questions about what to look
for/search for/write down for each
question in which Ms G. , the teacher
assistant, and I would aid help to point
them in the right direction if needed.
This assignment will take a couple of
class periods to complete.

*I noticed that even though students

were instructed to use search engines
like Kid-Rex and Culture Grams, neither
of the websites gave results that
covered the entire question asked on
the worksheet. We had to use a general
Google search to find in depth
questions.

*The worksheet was a little lengthy but

covered the necessary terms needed to
show understanding of the subject.

* The text that the individual student is

reading is matched picked out with
their reading level by Ms. G

After asking Ms G what she was using,

she told me that it is a way of
determining students reading levels.
She also mentioned that it is very time
consuming.
