AD 182: Structural Hollow Section
Standard for the job
the right
Hot finished and cold formed structural hollow sections (SHS) are specified in different
standards. This is because the hot finished process and the cold formed process produce
sections with different material characteristics and, in the case if square and rectangular
sections, different sectional properties
It is important that structural hollow sections are correctly specified in design and ordering;
mixing of the product designations can result in the wrong product being supplied
Structural hollow sections are still being ordered to BS 4360 even though it has now been
superseded by European standards.
Hot finished SHS should be specified from BS EN 10210-1: 1994 for the material and BS.
4848: Part 2: 1991 for tolerances and dimensions.
BS 4848: Part 2: 1991 will be superseded by BS EN 10210-2 in early 1996.
Cold formed SHS is specified in BS 6363: 1983, which will be superseded by BS EN 10219-
1 and BS 10219-2 in early 1996.
