S4E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to model the
effects of the position and motion of the Earth and the moon in relation
to the sun as observed from the Earth.
a. Develop a model to support an explanation of why the length of day
and night change throughout the year.
b. Develop a model based on observations to describe the repeating
pattern of the phases of the moon (new, crescent, quarter,
gibbous, and full).
c. Construct an explanation of how the Earths orbit, with its consistent
tilt, affects seasonal changes.

Teach

Day 1: Day and Night

Teacher can create a T-Chart on the SmartBoard or White Board. Have students
lists things about Day and Nighttime. Ask students why they think we have Day
and Night.
Day 2: Seasons
Teacher can show students BrainPop video over the Seasons.
Day 1: Day and Night
Teacher will show students the Day/Night and Seasons page. Teacher and
Students can review the Storyboard That! Comic strip lesson for the Day and
Night Cycle together and watch the accompanying YouTube videos. While the
students are reviewing the information they will take notes on a graphic organizer
sheet about the day and night cycle. After that students will be broken apart into
groups of 2 or 3. In their groups the students will create their own comic book
strip using the Storyboard That! Website on either a laptop, desktop, or
tablet/iPad. Students will download and print their comic strips to share with other
classmates. Teacher will monitor to make sure students are on task and working
appropriately in a group.
Extension: If time permits allow students to explore the other resources located on
transmedia page.

n

Extension: If time permits allow students to play the online games listed on the
transmedia page.
Day 1: Day and Night Cycle
Lower students that need extra help will be partnered with other classmates
appropriately.
Enrichment: Higher students will have the option of also creating a second comic
strip on a topic previously discussed in science class.
Day 2: Seasons
Lower students that need extra help will be partnered with other classmates

appropriately.

Summarize

Enrichment: Higher students will have the option of also creating an online quiz
using ProProfs for other students in the class to take.
Day 1: Day and Night Cycle
TOTD: Have students explain on sheet of paper in detail what causes the day and
night cycle, and what they think would happen if the Earth stopped spinning on its
Axis.
Day 2: Seasons
TOTD: Have students identify the four seasons, and write a fact about each season
OR have students complete online quiz created by other students.
