Evaluative Statement
In this statement, I am evaluating my Honors 1000 Essay Number One, A New World: Same
People. The purpose of the paper or assignment was explaining the factors of way people
immigrated to Detroit between 1890 and 1930, using a narrative. I chose to write my story about
a young German woman that her travels. I wrote about how the move to Detroit might have
occurred in her case, and how life would have been like for her in the city. My motivation for
this particular story is the fact that I myself have a lot of German heritage. My great
Grandmother came over to America from German, I loosely followed her story. So, it was not
just an assignment for me, it was more like a walk through my family history. I feel like I almost
know how she would have been like, and what the world was like around her. This paper taught
me a lot about researching and writing styles. Before this assignment, I had no idea what
Chicago Manual style writing was, let alone how to use it correctly for a formal paper. This
project has added a lot of new skills and knowledge to my professional and personal repertoires.
I have included this specific paper to my E-portfolio because it is my first real college paper, and
it was a major accomplishment for me. This paper will be the base line for the rest of my college
writing experience. The writing experience provided by this paper not only enhanced my
personal writing skills, but also provided insight into my professional writing skills.
