Are African-American Males who are not involved in
either Non-Greek or Greek organizations that are
geared towards empowering, brotherhood, providing
positive networking opportunities, and promoting
black excellence, are more likely to not successfully
graduate from a four year institution?
Why are African- American men struggling to finish
at black college and universities and does being

Significance:
he problem many HBCUs face, is the successful graduations of
African American males. Many drop out due to financial reasons,
some transfer for sports or other athletic opportunities, or because
the school really is not a challenge for them or the institution may lose
their accreditations for a particular program. But many fail to graduate due
to falling in with the wrong crowd, or not having the proper support
needed to be great on the college level. As stated in an MSN NBCNEWS
article entitled, Men struggling to finish at black colleges, HBCUs
educate a hugely disproportionate share of low-income students.
Compared to other colleges defined by the government as "low-income
serving, HBCU graduation rates are just a few points lower. Many
universities have male empowerment groups, all with different names and
programming styles but the goal is still the same, to empower, provide
positive networking opportunities, to promote black excellence and raise
the retention and graduation rate of its institution among males. On the
other hand, those who are members of Greek Letter organizations tend to
have a higher graduation rate compared to those who are not.
