Vacuolar processing enzymes (VPEs) have been studied due to their caspase1 like activity and regulation of apoptosis. Both activities which play a
necessary role in development. These enzymes are cysteine peptidases in
charge of vacuolar proteins in higher plants such as in grapes. It formed
through the autocatlysis and synthesized from a larger protein precursor. 3
genes were cloned from various species of grapes. The 3 genes (VvVPE,
VvVPE, and VvVPE) are found in various parts of plants such as in the
flowers, fruiting bodies as well as the roots. These genes also exhibit
cysteine peptidase activity.
