When used within the data sheet raings (package power dissipation, maximum output ‘current, minimum and maximum input voltages) it provides the most cost-effective source of regulated #15V for power- ing linear ICs, Sometimes occasions arise in which tbe RC4195 ratings must be exceeded. One example is the "brownovt", During @ brownout, line voltages may be reduced to as low as 75 ‘VRMSs, causing tbe input voltage to the RC4195 to drop. ‘below the minimum dropout voltage. When this happens, tbe negative output voltage can go to positive. The maximum amount of current available is approximately 5 mA. In general this is not enough current to damage most ICs which the RC4195 might be supplying, but itis a potentially ‘destructive condition, Fortunately, itis easy to protect against. As shown in the typical application cieuit, a diode, can be connected to the negative output 1 a small signal silicon diode is used, it will clamp the nega- tive output voltage at about +0.55V. A Sehottky barrier or ‘germanium devige would elamp the voltage at about 40.3. Another cure which will keep the negative output negative all times is the | m®@ resistor connected between the +15V ‘output and the Comp- terminal. this resistor will then sup- ply drive to the negative output transistor, easing it satu rate to-1V during the brownout, Heatsinking When operating these devices near their extremes of load ‘current, ambient temperature and input-outpot differential, ‘consideration of package dissipation becomes important 10 Balancod Output (Vour = 215V) avoid thermal shutdown at 175°C, The RCSI9S has this fea- ture to prevent damage tothe device. It typically starts affect- ‘ng load regulation approximately 2°C below 175°C. To avoid shuldown, some form of heatsinking should be used or ‘one ofthe above operating conditions would need to be erated." ‘The following isthe basic equation for junction temperature: = T+ PDP 9 Equation 1 where ‘Ty = junction temperature (°C) ‘Ta = ambient air temperature (°C) Pr = power dissipated by device (W) 63.4 = thermal resistance from junetion to ambient ait ccm) ‘The power dissipated by the voltage regulator can be detailed as follows: Py = (iy Your) *lo+ Vin lg Equation 2 where VIN = input voltage our = regulated output voltage Jo = load eurent 1Q= quiescent current drain ma OV Tos -H15V at 100 mA TON yg OPP our tone 4195 ul 16VTo.0¥ . 15V at 100 mA sang Nour I Th ¥ Figure 10. Typleal Application Cireult “In allowing for process deviations, the user should work with a maximum allowable function temperature of 150°C. ““The current drain wil increase by 50WA'VOUT on postive side and 10QuA/VouT on negative side 6 Resi9s PRODUCT SPECIFICATION Let's look at an application where a user is trying to deter ‘mine whether the RC4195 ina high temperature environ- ‘ment will need a heatsink.
