SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION

The experiment is all about the measurement of density and determination of partial
molar volume of ethanol-water system. This was achieved by using a pycnometer is used for
measuring the density of a solution using a reference liquid such as water. The experiment
focuses on the determination of density of the liquid and determination of the partial molar
volumes of a binary system of liquids from density measurement. In the experiment, the
pycnometer is to be calibrated to determine the exact volume of the pycnometer. This was
achieved by weighing the pycnometer when it was empty and when it was filled with water. In
the next part of the experiment, different mixtures of an ethanol-water system were prepared to
achieve results the results were plotted on a graph to determine the molar volume and mole
fraction. A plot of molar volume versus the mole fraction and that of the partial molar volumes of
each component versus the mole fraction of water were constructed to determine the partial
molar volumes. In the process of doing the experiment sources of errors could have caused for
incorrect data like for example the pycnometer was not totally dry which contributes for the
higher value of mass and a mis-calibrated balance which leads to an inaccurate measurement.
