real (similar to reification). 2.The construction of human subjects as inanimate objects. This often occurs linguistically, for example, involving avoidance of attribution of agency to a human (or group or people), suggestions that the human is owned by someone else or that it is acceptable to hurt the human or not show concern for their feelings (see Nussbaum 1995). The following is an example of objectification from a magazine article: Two years later, at 18, she found herself pregnant by Smith (BNC, CD5). Here the woman (the singer Neneh Cherry) is depicted as having no agency in her pregnancy.
