Grade/Subject: Grade 1 Math

Lesson Duration: 30 minutes
OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES
General Learning Expectations:

General Outcome (Grade 1): Develop number sense.

Specific Learning Expectations: Specific Outcome 9:

Demonstrate an understanding of addition of numbers with answers to 20 and their corresponding subtraction
facts, concretely, pictorially and symbolically, by:
using familiar mathematical language to describe additive and subtractive actions
-

creating and solving problems in context that involve addition and subtraction

modelling addition and subtraction, using a variety of concrete and visual representations, and
recording the process symbolically.

Specific Outcome 10: Describe and use mental mathematics strategies for basic addition facts and related
subtraction facts to 18
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

Gummy Frogs
Pencil and paper to record answers
Subtraction worksheet

PROCEDURE
Introduction- (10 min)
Hook/Attention Grabber:
Have students gather on the carpet and review subtraction. Go over a strategy of having 10 candies and what
happens if you take two away. What does that equal? Do a few questions with students to refresh their
memory.
Tell students they will have a subtraction worksheet to do. Explain to them they get to use gummy frogs to
help them with subtraction. Make sure they know they can not eat the gummy frogs until they finish all the
questions using them.
For each question, they must use the frogs (ex. 8-2, they have 8 frogs and take two away and what does that
equal?)
Once instructions are given tell students to return to their desk and the students that are sitting quietly will get
the frogs and worksheet first.

Body (15 min)

Once all students have worksheet and gummy frogs they can begin.
Make sure students know that they must be using the candy to help them and not eating it or else they will not
get candy again.
Give students time reminders of how much time is left.
Circulate around the class helping students with questions and making sure they are using the frogs or fingers
to help them.
Count down from 10 when time is up so students must collect papers and bring them to me. Names must be
on all sheets.

Conclusion (5 min)

Collect all sheets from students and tell them that once they are back in their desk sitting quietly they may eat
some of the gunny frogs or save them for recess.
Get students read for recess and when they are quiet and everyones area is clean they will be dismissed after
the bell has rang.
