The analysis of the text My mothers hands

In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on.

The text My mothers hands was written by Robert Fontaine. He is an American writer. The
text is about two old spouses that have been living together for fifty years. The title is quite related to
the text, because the narrator wanted to show us the roughness of his mothers hands from years of
work. This text is a narration with some dialogues:
I went to a movie.
My mother was stunned. A movie?
The narrator is an over one. He takes part to the actions, he is the son of his spouses: These trips
excited, but did not overwhelm my parents.
There are three main characters: the narrator (the son), the woman (narrators mother), the man
(narrators father). Also, there are some absent characters, the family of the narrator, that he talks about:
I would go home to where my wife and children were bustling. The narrator is a decent man, because
he have helped his parents to get over their fight: I loved them and encouraged them. I hopped in a
bus and went down to see my mother. I can see his concern here, he is worried about his parents. It
means that he loves them very much. His mother is a very strong woman, because she tried to forget the
past. She said that twenty five years ago his spouse deserted her for another woman. So she tried to
forget his mistake until that moment. Also, she said Ill fix him (her husband), that represents her
female force to maintain her family. His father is an old man, he is very smart. He came back and he
brought his wife a gift: He handed her the package. It was a bottle of hand lotion. That says a lot about
his personality. He doesnt give up, he doesnt quit and he respects his wife, even if they had fought.
The action takes part in a city with a lot of stores and shops: he walks for miles through stores
and shops. The action happens in a respectable family. The rising action is when their son enetered the
apartment and found his parents fighting: When I got in the apartment they were fighting. The climax
happens when the woman and her son are talking about all the old days and she said that his father had
deserted her for another woman. I think it was terrible for her son to know this about his father, but he
didnt condemn him. He wanted to find and to help him. The falling action is represented by the
narrators process of searching. He didnt find his father and he just came back to his mother to calm her
down. In the end, the old man came back home and he bought a present for his wife. It was a a hand
lotion. He wanted to show her that he was very grateful for all the things that she did My mothers
hands have worked for me and others for many years: washing, baking, scrubbing, digging in
garden. I found it a gest of affection and love. The denounment of this story is very sentimental,
because the spouses remained together: It was a moment, I am sure, when they preferred no company.
I purpose that they maybe have been looking through memories of all these fifty years together.
The main theme of this text is the life and all its barriers. According to the quotation, it has a lot of
obstacles, pain and sorrow, but you have to overgrow them, because the life goes on, the time goes on
and you cannot stop live it. The idea of the text is that every family has an inner conflict and if they pass
trought, it means that its a strong family, that there is love and respect, because not everybody can
overcome tragedies or fights, just people that are really able to sacrifice something, people that are really
able to love.
The message of this text is that you have always help people to overcome the tragedies. You have
to be near your family and you have to be grateful to your parents because they did a lot for you and for
your developing.
In conclusion, I want to say that I have definitely liked this story, because it shows the conection
between parents and their children. I think is develops our affection to our family members.
