The Struggle against Apartheid: Choose three sources from the textbook which

you think tell us about the struggle against Apartheid. Make sure you include a range
of sources and themes.
ORIGIN
Cartoon by the
British
cartoonist
Illingworth on
the result of the
Rivonia trial

Leaders of the
FSAW holding
the petition. The
leader was a
black woman.

PURPOSE
It is to show that
the majority of
south Africa and
the minorities
are the whites
but they are
being held down
by the economy,
the politics and
the police which
are in control of
the whites. And
that he black
majority can
easily stand up
and fight back.
In the photo we
see the leader of
the FSAW
(Federation of
South African
women) Lillian
Ngoyi with her
secretary who is
a white woman
by the name of
Helen Joseph an
anti-apartheid

VALUE
The value is that
it is a British
perspective and
it shows how the
west see the
whole apartheid
system and their
reaction towards
it.

LIMITATIONS
That it is only
one British
perspective and
we are not sure
if this is a
shared opinion
throughout all
countries in
Europe

WHY I HAVE CHOSEN THIS SOURCE

Because it is the most impactful
image/source for me, since it has such a
powerful and clear message.

The value is that

Helen Joseph is
willingly taking a
photo with the
people who are
inferior to the
whites.

This only shows

us one white
activist and
maybe there are
more that we
are limited to
see.

Because it is really interesting to see

that the whites that live in south Africa
are fighting against the whites who live
in South Africa.

Soweto, June
1976

activist, it shows
that a small
minority of the
small minority
population of
the whites is not
in accord with
the apartheid
system.
The purpose is
that the picture
is showing the
students of
black-only
schools fighting
against the use
of Afrikaans in
their schools.
They have had
enough of the
white authority
and have finally
decided to stand
up and protest.

The value is that

this is one of the
first protest
against the
white authority
and that it is
being led by a
group of school
students.

The limitations
are that we
dont see what
they are
marching
towards and this
might be useful
information
since it will give
us a better
understanding
of the Image

I chose this photo because it is

interesting for me to see a revolt being
led by a group of students instead of a
legitimate group of activists.
