Freshwater Pollution Guided Notes

Holt Environmental Science Section 5.2, pg. 131

1.What is water pollution? The introduction of
chemical, physical, and biological agents
2.What are the major causes of water pollution?
Industrialization and human population
explosion
3.What is point pollution? Provide one example.
Pollution discharge from a single source,
pidgeon river polution
4.What is nonpoint pollution? Provide one
example. Pollution comes from many different
places oil being absorbed into runoff leading to
readers.
5.Why is nonpoint pollution a more serious
problem? It is harder to track and clean up
**Leave some room here for a sketch (wastewater
treatment)**
6.What is sludge and how do we deal with it?

thick,
soft, wet mud or a similar viscous mixture of liquid and solid components, especially the
product of an industrial or refining process, disposal barrels

7.What are pathogens? List some examples.

Disease causing organisms such as bacteria,
viruses, and parasitic worms
8.How can biological magnification affect
polluted aquatic ecosystems? It kills off

predators and and booms producers, or kills

both
**Leave some room here for sketches
(biomagnifications & eutrophication)**
9.What is thermal pollution and why is it a
problem? When excessive amounts of heat
enter and ecosystem, makes temperatures for
currently living organisms
10. What is the Clean Water Act? When was it
passed?1972 retains chemical, physical and
biological integrity of national water
11. Why will groundwater pollution be a longlasting problem? There is tons of pollution in
the ground and in aquifers
12. Where does most bottled water come
from? It is tap water
