EXT. DAY - PORT ANGELES HIGH SCHOOL

Cadence and Ella are walking together outside and sit down
on the grass. Cadence looks shy and nervous.
ELLA
So, how was your first day at Port
Angeles? Did you make any friends?
CADENCE
It was fine, Im used to moving a
lot. Youre the only friend Ive
made so far, though.
The two girls continue their conversation until a tall,
older boy comes up to them and looks down at them.
EVERETT
Hey, Ella, lets go. I found a new
Mexican restaurant we can try
tonight.
ELLA
Hey Ev! Sorry Cadence, this is my
older brother, sometimes he picks
me up from school.
Cadence looks up at Ev and starts blushing, obviously
attracted to him. Ev reaches his hand out and she stands up
and tucks her hair behind her ears, smiles, and shakes his
hand. Ella and Ev begin to walk away.
ELLA
(Yelling)
See you tomorrow! Maybe you can
come over after school and we can
hang out.

INT. EVENING - ELLAS ROOM

Cadence and Ella are laying on Ellas bed going through old
CDs, listening to music, and passing around a soccer ball.
Cadence turns to look at Ella.
CADENCE
So, doesnt your brother live here?
ELLA
No, hes 21 so hes all moved out
going to the community college
around here. Why, do you like him?

The girls giggle then Cadence shrugs, trying to hide her

crush. She changes the conversation by putting a new song
on.

INT. AFTERNOON - GROCERY STORE

There is snow falling heavily outside on a very cold

January. Cadence is walking into the grocery store when she
runs into Ev, who is walking out.
EVERETT
Hey, youre Cadence, right? One of
my sisters friends? Im Ev by the
way.
CADENCE
Yeah, how have you been?
EVERETT
Good, Im going to see this new
band this weekend called the Hot
Flamingos Im pretty excited.
CADENCE
No way! Thats my favorite band! I
wasnt sure about going because Im
new to the area and dont know
anyone here who likes them.
EVERETT
Really? You could come with me and
my friends, heres my number.
Ev grabs Cadences phone and starts typing his number into
it. Then smiles as he walks out to his car into the now
lightly falling snow. Cadence continues grocery shopping
with a huge smile on her face.

INT. NIGHT - CADENCES BEDROOM

Cadence is laying on her bed on the phone with Ella telling
her about what happened with Ev.
CADENCE
(giggling)
And then he said we should go to
the concert together and put his
number in my phone.

ELLA
(concerned tone)
Thats great, Cadence, but be
careful. I love my brother but he
isnt that great when it comes to
relationships. Being with him might
not be as great as you hope it will
be.
CADENCE
Im sure he will be great, hes
cute and smart and I really like
him. Everything will be fine, see
you tomorrow at school. Love you,
night!

INT. MONTAGE - VARIOUS PLACES THROUGHOUT PORT ANGELES

Cadence and Ev go to the concert together and then go on

other dates. They are seen together at a restaurant, a movie
theater, on a picnic, bowling, and mini golfing. End montage
with Ev dropping Cadence off at her house after a date,
avoiding kissing her and hugging her goodbye instead.

INT. NIGHT - EVS APARTMENT LIVING ROOM

Cadence and Ev are snuggling on the couch watching a movie

while its raining outside. Cadence tries to kiss Ev but he
pulls away from her, uninterested. Cadence gets upset and
starts rubbing her arms nervously.
EVERETT
Babe, why are you doing that?
CADENCE
What do you mean, "babe?" Its not
like were exclusive or anything.
Weve been seeing each other for a
month now and you wont even let me
kiss you!
EVERETT
Well, I just had a cigarette, you
dont want our first kiss to be
gross do you?
CADENCE
Thats such a lame excuse. You know
I like you, I really really like
you. And you like me, right?
Because if you dont then what is
this?

Everett pauses and looks away, trying to think of something

to say. Cadence starts to get more upset, rubbing her arms
faster now.
EVERETT
I do like you its just...You dont
understand. Youre just a kid
youre like my sister. Im four
years older than you, I just want
to keep my options open.
CADENCE
(taken aback)
I...I cant believe you would say
that. We have so much in common,
Im perfect for you. I just dont
understand...
EVERETT
I just dont think I could ever be
with you in that way. Youre just
not the type of person I need right
now.
Cadence starts crying and runs outside into the rain, she
goes out to her car and sits in there for awhile before
deciding to drive home.

INT. EVENING - CADENCES DINING ROOM

Cadence and her dad are sitting at the dinner table making
small talk while eating. Cadence looks exhausted, wearing
sweats with her hair up.
FATHER
Sweetie, are you okay? Youre
barely eating.
Tears start rolling out of Cadences eyes as she sets down
her fork and looks up at her dad.
CADENCE
Dad, what did you do when mom
decided she didnt want to be with
you anymore?
FATHER
Well, I fought for her. I tried to
make her understand that we could
still work but she obviously didnt
want to be together anymore. Still,
its important that you at least
try to fight for what you want.

Cadence stops crying, wipes her face, and excuses herself

from the table. She goes upstairs to her bedroom and gets
dressed, checks the clock then grabs her keys and head of to
the Roadside Grille.

INT. NIGHT - THE ROADSIDE GRILLE

Cadence bursts through the doors of the bar, looking for Ev

who is working that night. To her surprise, he is with his
ex, Laura, chatting and visibly flirting at the bar. Ev
looks up at Cadence and smirks.
EVERETT
Cadence, I told you I didnt want
to be with you, why are you even
here?
CADENCE
I thought maybe I could change your
mind, but I guess she already has!
Laura laughs at Cadence and grabs Everetts arm. As Cadence
turns to go out the door Ev looks away and goes back to his
conversation with Laura, seemingly unaffected by the
encounter.

INT. MIDNIGHT - CAR

Cadence is driving home while calling Ella on speaker phone.

ELLA
(sleepily)
Hello, what is it, whats wrong?
CADENCE
(sobbing)
Your brother! I went to the bar to
see him and he was with his ex,
Laura. He told me he despised her,
that she tried too hard to be
popular. Whats wrong with me? He
would rather be with someone he
hates than be with me.
ELLA
Im sorry Cadence, I really am, but
Ev will never actually be with you.
He was probably just using you
because he was bored waiting for
Laura to take him back. Really, Im
sorry but you should just give up
on him.

Ella give Cadence this advice just as she pulls up to her

house. She starts to breathe faster and is too overwhelmed
to open the door to her house, so she starts banging on it
until her dad answers.
FATHER
(worried)
Whats wrong? Are you okay?
CADENCE
I think...I think Im having a
panic attack.
FATHER
Its fine, honey, youre fine.
Everything will be ok. Youre ok.
Cadences father brings her into the house and sits her down
on the couch, pushes her hair back and keeps whispering that
she will be okay until she finally stops crying and falls
asleep.

EXT. AFTERNOON - PORT ANGELES HIGH SCHOOL

Ella is sitting outside by herself waiting for her brother

to pick her up, shivering in the snow. Shes leaving a
voicemail for Cadence.
ELLA
Hey. Cadence its me. I hope youre
okay, I got all of this weeks
assignments from your teachers, I
can bring them by later if you
want. Im really sorry about
everything that happened.
Ella hangs up the phone just as Everett walks up to her and
gives him a dirty look.
EVERETT
What? What did I do?
ELLA
You know what you did! She
seriously hasnt been to school all
week! I know you dont want to be
with her but why mess around with
her feelings like that? Shes my
friend, Ev, my best friend.
EVERETT
I know...Come on lets go get food.

Ella rolls her eyes and gets up to leave with her brother,
still upset about his actions.

INT. SUMMER NIGHT - HOUSE PARTY

The house is overflowing with people dancing and drinking

while loud music is blaring from the speakers. Ev is
obviously drunk, dancing with Laura, celebrating that they
are moving to Seattle together in a few months.
EVERETT
(slurring)
Hey, Cadence, I am so, in love with
you.
LAURA
(gasps)
You know for a fact I am not that
stupid attention-seeking girl!
Laura pushes Ev away from her and walks away from him and
starts dancing with another guy. Everett tries to grab Laura
but then lets go and stumbles outside. He starts walking
down the street to Cadences house. When he finally gets
there, he starts yelling outside of her window.
EVERETT
(yelling)
Cadence! Its me, Ev! I came to
apologize! Come down!
Cadence looks out her window and that comes outside to see
what Ev wants. He stumbles up to her and gives her a hug.
EVERETT
I miss you so much, Im so sick of
Laura shes so shallow I only ever
get to be with myself when Im with
you.
CADENCE
Ev...Its been five months. You
left me, remember?
EVERETT
I know but I think Im going to
leave her and then maybe I could be
with you instead. Youre just so
beautiful and Ive never loved
anyone in the world but I think I
might be in love with you.

I dont know Ev... Youre drunk,
just let me call Ella.

Ev grabs Cadences phone and pulls her towards him. He

sloppily kisses her and Cadence pulls away. She hesitates
but finally kisses him back and they keep kissing until they
get up to her room, they take their clothes off and get into
bed, Ev still drunk and Cadence falling for every word he
says.

INT. MORNING - BEDROOM

Cadence wakes up as Ev is quietly putting his clothes on

while fixing his hair in her mirror.
CADENCE
Where are you going? Cant we hang
out some more today?
EVERETT
Im moving to Seattle today with
Laura. Shes going to school there
and Im going to find a job as a
musician. Im sorry about last
night, it was a mistake, I was
drunk and just wanted to see what
it would be like.
CADENCE
What would what be like? You said
you loved me.
EVERETT
You know...having sex with you. And
if I remember correctly, I didnt
say I was in love with you.
Cadence starts breathing heavily again and begins crying. Ev
kisses her on the forehead, wraps her blanket around her,
and walks out of the bedroom and the house. Cadence cries
for awhile and then decides to get up and take a shower. She
exhaustively makes her way to the bathroom and begins to
blast her favorite song by the Hot Flamingos,then gets
herself ready for the day. Cadence calls Ella and she comes
over to talk.
ELLA
How are you doing? Im sorry my
brother is such a jerk, I thought
you knew he was moving today.

CADENCE
Yeah well I try not to be involved
in his life anymore, well until
last night at least. I knew this
would happen and I just let it, I
feel like such an idiot.
ELLA
Youre not an idiot. You are so
much better than him, you deserve
someone who loves wholeheartedly,
no matter what. You deserve to be
whole again.
CADENCE
I guess youre right. Maybe one day
I will be okay, I just need to be
sad for awhile.
Ella nods her head and the two girls turn up the song
theyre listening to and lay on the floor, not speaking, but
knowing they are there for each other.

EXT. FALL DAY - LAKE

Cadence and Ella are sitting at a picnic bench looking out

at the lake together, both seem older and happier.
ELLA
So, how are you and Aiden?
CADENCE
Good! Hes so sweet, I really like
him. How are you and Grant?
ELLA
We just celebrated our one year
last night. Everett came home for
Thanksgiving and was asking about
you.
CADENCE
I know, he messaged me. I like
checking up on him every once in
awhile. He should be happy with
Laura, Im getting happier now,
too.
ELLA
Im glad, I know he misses you but
he really hasnt changed since the
day he left.

Yeah, maybe one day a long time
from now we could try again, but
definitely not any time soon.
Cadence and Ella get up and start walking down to the shore,
laughing and smiling as the last few fall leaves start
drifting slowly off of the trees.
