PSYCHOLOGICAL
EVALUATION
indicating intense worry and distress. Hasnt slept in weeks since her sons
disappearance, easily irritable and disposed to intense emotion. Attempted to
communicate with her missing son using a string of lights, convinced he is alive
somehow. Chopped a hole out of her house after seeing an "animal" that "didn't have a
face" on the wall.
INTELLECTUAL FUNCTIONING: Fixated on her own ruminations, dwelling on what
she believes is supernatural communication with Will, and wondering whether he is still
alive. Intensely pursues answers, no matter how insane her hunches are. "Maybe Im a
mess, maybe Im crazy. Maybe Im out of my mind! But, God help me, Ill keep these
lights up until the day I die, if I think theres any chance that Will is still out there."
PSYCHOLOGICAL
INTERPRETATION
phone, loud music coming from his room, flickering lights, and a monster in the wall.
SOCIAL FUNCTIONING: Married young, divorced, recovering from codependency
with ex-husband Lonnie, burdened as a single mother providing for 2 sons with a retail
job. Stuck in the denial stage of grief following Wills disappearance. Refuses to
acknowledge others, including her son Jonathan and the Chief of Police, when they
claim she is delusional or going insane. Unable to accept the severity of her external
reality, internal thoughts and feelings, believes Will is still alive even after his body was
discovered. That is not my son. Refused to sign death certificate.
Joyce is fixated on locating and rescuing her son. "I am not gonna stop looking for him
SUMMARY
until I find him and bring him home! I am going to bring him home!" Her frantic
behaviors, ruminations, and supernatural communication attempts appear crazy to
everyone except her.
