Summary

This final project added to my understanding of genre in a few ways. After creating three
extra genres to go along with my research essay I find it much easier to understand the key
factors of what makes up each genre. The most interesting portion of the genre is figuring out the
target audience. For example, when using a twitter the target audience is mostly youth, but when
using a poem, the target is most likely an older audience. Distinguishing the difference between
genres has become easier for me.
Also, the project challenged my understanding of creating genre by making me create a
genre that isnt a social media, but is about a social media. For example, I created a character
map of a fictional character. This was very difficult because I struggled with making the
connection between the online website and activities and putting a human face to them.
However, I was successful in this attempt by incorporating key traits in the social media
platforms into the characters personality.
This project also solidified my understanding of genre by opening my horizon to the
many types of genres. Before I was scared to write a poem about anything, especially myself.
Now that I understand the inner workings of how the genre appeals to others I became more
comfortable writing them. Also, after gaining knowledge of the tone each genre portrays to the
reader I became more confident in my writing because I understood how it sounded in context
with the genre.
In conclusion, I find that project three was extremely helpful in my understanding of
genre. I started out as having zero understanding about the uses of genre. Now I feel like I could
teach a course on how to identify and analyze different genres. I also feel more confident writing
and sharing things that I have created because of my new knowledge of the creation and inner
workings of the piece. All in all, this project has taught me to be a better writer and added to the
tools I use every day to analyze life.
