Refraction
Purpose: To demonstrate the refraction of light as it enters another medium.
Procedure:
1) In air, light does not bend at any points. The angle of incidence and refraction is 45°. When
“light is incident along the normal, it does not bend,
.2) In water, the angle of incidence is 45° and the angle of refraction is 35°
3) In plastic, the angle of incidence is 45° and the angle of refraction is 30°
‘Questions:
1) If there was no atmosphere, would we have more or less daylight hours?
-We would have less daylight hours,
2) Pools, streams, lakes, etc. appear shallower than they really are, due to refraction of light. To
understand this reason, assume a coin is placed in a fountain. Trace the Tight from the coin as it
leaves the water and enters your eyes. Indicate the apparent depth of the fountain
‘)
3) A white light is incident upon a glass prism. Show how light is dispersed as it goes through
the prism. (hint: the speed of blue light in glass is less than that of red)
