Vocation in Prison Psychiatry
1. How important is it for prisoners to receive mental health care in the grand scheme of
things and what societal changes does it influence?
2. I chose the topic of my dream vocation for this assignment. I figured it
would be a good idea since I am a college student and essentially what
I do here prepares me for my journey to medicine. Ive always known
what I wanted to do as my career. Ive done the researched on all the
requirements for becoming a prison psychiatrist in the past. However,
my purpose for this project is to explore the significance of prison
mental health care on the inmate population and ultimately society. I
am hoping to understand prison psychiatry in a more objective way in
order to know what to truly expect from my service.
3. Before I began developing knowledge on my topic I believed there was a correlation
between the mentally ill and crime. I later found this to be true. Inmates with mental
illness are more likely to be repeat offenders and also suffer from harassment by more
functioning inmates in prison. These are usually individuals who never received proper
mental health care if any at all. After inquiring about this topic it showed me the
importance of correctional mental health in the functionalities of inmates when they are
released. This ultimately makes them integrate back into society easier with lower risk of
repeating social disturbances.
