Course Descriptions
In this course, various essays, prose, newspaper articles, editorials, etc. about current events are chosen to increase the ability
to read and understand English and presentations and discussions are conducted to enhance the ability to express.
Introduction to English Linguistics (1)
In this first part of the two semester course, the pronunciation, vocabulary, and sentence structure of English are systematically
analyzed to understand the essence of English and learn the study methodology of English linguistics. Furthermore, the
capability to apply such analysis to the study of English is nurtured.
FLEX English (1)
This course uses the content of detailed areas of FLEX as materials for lectures and practice to improve students
comprehensive and practical English skills.
Advanced English Writing (2)
Skills necessary to write advanced level English are taught. Writing skills to critically express one's subjective thoughts are
nurtured and intuition in English is cultivated to familiarize the students with functional words such as articles and prepositions.
Students learn how to write documents necessary to study overseas, business documents, and official letters so that they can
be exposed to practical writing.
Advanced English Conversation (2)
This course enhances English conversation skills. Students participate in various conversation activities in order to expose them
to ample opportunities to express themselves in English.
Readings in English Masterpieces (2)
To nurture high level capabilities in English reading, notable compositions in English from various genres are selected to read
and understand. Expression capabilities are also developed through presentations and discussions.
Understanding the U.K.
This course offers an overview of the politics, society, culture, history, etc. of Great Britain and analyzes how such
characteristics of the country are expressed in the language of Britain.
Introduction to English Linguistics (2)
The second part of the two-semester course starts with the analysis and understanding of the semantic structure of English and
teaches the main theories and concepts of the various subordinate areas of English linguistics including the learning of English,
psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, and sociolinguistics, and history of English as well as those of relevant applied
areas. As such, the understanding of English and English linguistics and their practical use is increased.
FLEX English (2)
This sequel to FLEX English 1 uses the detailed contents of FLEX as materials for lectures and practice to improve students
comprehensive and practical English skills.
English Syntax
This course deals with English syntax using the framework of rules and principles of transformational generative grammar;
analyzes the deduction from deep structure to the surface from the perspective of modern English; and develops thoughtful
insight into English syntax such as passive sentences and WH-sentences.
English Phonetics
This course teaches specific individual sounds and rhythms used in English pronunciation and their modulation in a systematic
and organized manner to introduce an objective analytical method to consider how English pronunciations are expressed
acoustic- ally. Based on such method, English sounds are analyzed in experiments using a computerized phonetic analyzer and
methods to apply the sounds in terms of English education and phonetics are taught.
English Debating (1)
This course aims to increase the fluency of English speech and improve the capacity to clearly express ones intent in English
debate. It also allows students to participate in various mock discussions to offer various opportunities to build the capacity to
debate in English.
Computer & English Linguistics
Students learn how to analyze through the computer in an objective and systematic manner and practically apply English
vocabulary, sentence structures, denotations, etc. They learn how to derive useful information from the corpus such as
dictionaries, texts, and conversations, and furthermore, explore future-oriented application methods such as English education
using the computer and automatic translation.
Practice in English Sentences
After learning the grammatical theories relating to major English syntax necessary for understanding complex sentence
structures of contemporary English, students acquire a better command of practical English through English composition
