Problem Set # 1;

No-1 A gas is used to drive foam in a capillary tube of 0.01 mm diameter. The advancing
contact angle is 40o and the receding contact angle is 5o. The systems surface tension is
70 dynes/cm.
i. What is the pressure P1 will be required to move the foam bridge through the capillary
tube
ii. What will be your answer if the receding and the advancing contact angle are the
same?

No-2 Starting from the Forcheimer equation where kinetic energy effect is not negligible, show
that a modified Darcys equation foor non-Darcy flow in porous medium can be written
as:

No-3 Fluid flows through the composite horizontal slab shown below. If the flow is Darcian,
and at steady state, answer the following questions.
(a) What is the average permeability of the composite
(b) Sketch pressure versus distance for each of the composite, assuming uniform flux
distribution at the entry face of the block
(c) Identify the point of maximum cross-flow if any.
K2 = 25 md

K3 = 100 md

Calculate the following:
i. The average permeability in the (x,y) plane
ii. The angle at which the principal axes of permeability is inclined to the well co-ordinate
axes
iii. Do we have enough information to calculate the average permeability in the (x,z) plane?
