Sink or Swim?

Research Question / Problem

Statement
Which type of water will allow a piece of bathing suit
material to absorb the least amount of water?

Rationale
This experiment will benefit society because swimmers are
always trying to go faster at meets and the type of water
they use may affect how much water their suit absorbs,
and the more water the material absorbs the more drag is
created, making you go slower.

Abstract
Include your one paragraph abstract here.

Hypothesis
If piece of bathing suit material is place in salt, chlorine, and
ground water, then the material will absorb the least
amount of water in the salt water, because the salt in the
water will make the material float and absorb less water.

Materials

1 bucket- Tupper ware

Bathing suit material-speedo- (30 grams)
Salt water-ocean
Ground water-hose from house
Chlorine (pool) water-pool from house
Timer-apple iPhone
Science fair notebook-target composition book
Scale- ohaus
Pen- paper mate

Procedure

Cut suit to 30 grams

Collect pool water
Collect ground water
Collect salt water
Collect scale
Create a chart in data notebook
Create a 1 minute timer on iPhone
Place suit material in pool water for 1 minute
Weigh material on scale
Subtract 30 grams
Record results in table
Repeat steps 8-11 ,19 more times
Place material in salt water for 1 minute
Weigh material on scale
Subtract 30 grams

Record results in table

Repeat steps 13- 16 , 19 more times
Place material in ground water for 1 minute
Weigh material on scale
Subtract 30 grams
Record results in the table
Repeat steps 18-21, 19 more times

Conclusion
The results show that the salt water allowed for the bathing
suit material to absorb the least amount, making my
hypothesis correct. The salt water had the lowest average
of 60.32 making it the best water.
