DIALECT WITH DEANS HELP.

Moral: It is more important for boys to have a
father figure than girls
Introduction
A. Describe the important characters first / introduce them1. Mom- One of my Moms dark black curls fell into her face as she screwed the oil cap back on
her Z71. Do not give her a first name. it is only important for her to be a mom. Mom should
have a manly aspect to her. She owns a truck so maybe she is seen in the story working on it?
(ASK CHAZ FOR GOOD EXAMPLE OF WHAT A PERSON COULD BE DOING TO
THEIR Z71) Moms hands were covered in oil as black as her hair, she throws the curl back
and secures it under the side of her hat. Mom wiped a tiny droplet of sweat off her forehead
with the back of her hand. The sweat is now replaced with a streak of motor oil. With a
concerned look on her face, she asks Did I ever teach you how to change your oil? No, I
replied. She slams the hood of her pick-up truck closed, Ill show you the next time you come
home.
2. Mandy?- Main character. Daughter. Sister to Jonah. Delaney is a good kid
and respects her mother and other adults. ADOPTED. My friends used to always
ask me if I got my blonde hair and blue eyes from my Dad.
-

Give Mandy qualities that men usually possess. Shes a light packer
and doesnt need help packing her stuff into her car.
Mandy = Joy
Delaney= Julia/a girl who grew up in the all-American household.
Less independent than Mandy is.

3. Jonah- Trouble maker. Son who grew up without a strong father figure.
ALSO ADOPTED. Doesnt respect his mom or anyone. Does what he wants
when he wants and steals from his mom/mandy often
4. Other information- Joy always said that her mother never really showed
any emotions in excess. They dont often say I love you and hugs are
always short-lived. Joy and her mom look COMPLETELY different. Joy is
short and blonde and her mom is a tall, big boned ginger. ??Include a
snippet about how joys grandma lives with her ? or that the neighbor next
door was one of joys father figures but her brother seems to not benefit
from that relationship whatsoever.
B. Mandy is leaving to go back to college again and her mom is sad. Why?
5. Mom is sad because 1.) Mandy is leaving and 2.) she feels like she has
failed as a mother because her son is a delinquent.

C. BFF is used to hearing stories about Jonah.

IN BODY:
D. Explain Jonah more and give examples of how Mandy has benefited from
growing up with an independent woman as a single parent.
E. Delaney picks mandy up to drive 15 minutes to train station.
F. Explain area where they live in England. Use deans description and google
maps to create ideas.
G. Talk about Mr.Terry (neighbor)
H. JONAH SELLS COKE. How does mandy find out?
I.

USE QUOTE: fathers make a valuable contribution to the development of sex-roles, cognitive
abilities, and achievement motivation (Stephens, Mathews, 113).-

This study is from back when the American dream included certain gender norms that
are frowned upon these days. Sure, I turned out alright, but that is because I had a
woman to look up to. Jonah had no real role model. Its not fair for boys. Boys need a
consistent role model in their lives.

Conclusion
A. My English professor told us to start thinking about writing a 10-page paper that either supports
or disagrees with the theory that a father figure is necessary in a boys life when growing up.
Previously, I did not agree with this. I believed that my Mom was enough.
