The Book
The person who taught me to read and write would have to be my mother. I remember
her reading to us all sorts of kids story ranging from Cat in the Hat to The Very Hungry
Caterpillar. I remember that my mom would read to us every night until we were around six or
seven and then she would make us read almost every day. At this point I would read some of the
more popular kids books and when I was around twelve I was not forced to read anymore.
After the first couple years of elementary school I could read and write pretty well. I
remember some events at the school that would help me progress as a good reader, one would be
the pairing of eighth graders with kindergarteners. The eighth graders would then read to us.
Another important thing that my school did was summer reading assignments. Although I hated
these they kept me in a book over the summer and overall probably really helped my reading and
writing.
Another thing that has greatly affected my reading and writing would be my younger
brother. When we were younger I would sometimes read to him. When he learned how to read
we would turn it into a competition to see who could read faster (which I would always win).
