Dear Professor Cambell,

Im excited for your class, I think I will be an interesting take on the classic teach the
new college students how to write like an adult first semester class. I suppose I should begin
with an introduction of my family and myself. Im 18, so when im not at school I live with my
parents, Kevin and Christine. My dad is a manager of an IT team at Lincoln Financial and my
mom is a kindergarten teacher. I have 3 siblings, one older brother, one younger brother and one
little sister. My older brother, Patrick, is barely 11 months older than me (so there is a 1-month
period where we are the same age that he despises) and currently going to college at Yale. My
younger brother, Carter, is the bane of my existence and is a rising Junior in high school. My
little sister, Anya, is going into 8th grade.
I too have a butt-ugly dog, a Boston Terrier by the name of Flash. Hes a bit of an
idiot, and his favorite toy in the world is not any of the expensive dog toys my mom likes to buy,
but used 1-gallon milk jugs. He steals them out of the recycling and runs around our backyard
with them until hes too exhausted to keep running. Still, I love the dumb animal and am going
to miss him while Im here.
I have 3 main reasons for coming to UNCC: its a big school, its got a strong engineering
program, and I got a scholarship. Ive had small school communities as far as I can remember,
and I am looking for a change. In middle school I went to a magnet program almost entirely
separated from the school it was hosted at. There were about 100 other people I regularly
interacted with. Then I went to high school at the Early college at Guilford; my graduating class
had 47 people in it. Now, I love these schools to death and I made amazing friends at them, but
its rather limiting in social opportunities and I wanted to go somewhere big for once. Thus,
UNCC. The strong engineering program is pretty self-explanatory. Im good at math and
science and discovered that I quite enjoyed engineering when I joined a FIRST FRC robotics
team in 9th grade. The UNCC engineering program is strong and has loads of amazing and brand
new resources. Finally, the clincher was the Scholarship. I am a Crown Scholar, which is a full
ride. The prospect of graduating debt free, especially compared to what Ive seen of my older
brothers college bills, appealed to my common sense.
As for hobbies, I cant say that Ive found my hobbies for college yet. In high school I
did way more extracurriculars than I will be able to manage in College. In my senior year, I was
the captain of my FIRST FRC robotics team, a committee chair for Guilford Model Congress, a
frequent delegate at other model congresses or model UNs as a member of the Model
Government team at my high school, defensive captain of my lacrosse team until I got injured,
and an Eagle Scout. Im going to try to keep up as much of those as I can, but it seems
unrealistic. At the very least I want to get involved with Club Lacrosse, Model UN and
volunteer at the FIRST FRC Championship this spring (which Im pretty sure is going to be
hosted in the SAC).
Cordially Yours,
Thomas Lawe
