Each ‘step consists of one poge in the Pupil’s Book, half a page in the Handwriting Book, one poge in the Activity Book and half @ page in the Numbers Book. The sequence for a ‘complete step is os follows: 2" Pupil’s Handwriting Activity Numbers Book Book Book Book “The Handwriting Book should only be used when the ‘equivalent step inthe Pupils Book has been completed, Handwriting The basis of good handwriting is o knowledge of the letter shapes ond the correct hand movements used to form them, This is much more important for beginners than producing ‘neat-Jooking handwriting that may have been formed incorrectly, Handwriting Book 1 teaches the small letters. These are the most dificult because most of them are formed with a single hand movement. They ore presented in families, ‘according to letter shape rather than in alphabetical order. Handwriting Book 2 teaches the copita letters. Most of these are formed with two or more seperate hond movements and they ore much easier to write, They are taught in alphabe.cal order, alongside o revision of theit smallleter equivalents. How to use this book 1 Before asking pupils to write anew letter, demonstrate it fon the blackboard. Always use a grid with @ baseline and three guidelines. Describe to the pupis in their mother tongue exactly what you are doing as you write, 2 Next hol-turn your back to the class, almost os if you ‘were going to write on the blackboard, and trace the letter in the cir with your finger. Get the class to do it with you ‘98 you describe the hand movernent, 3 If youare teaching « new letter, the pupils can now use their finger to trace the lorge solid black letter in the book (headed Look). This should be done as a class, with the teacher describing the hand movement. The dots show where each hand movement begins and the arrows show the directions to go in. Small numbers show the order in which the hand movements should be done. I there ore ‘no small numbers, the letter should be writen with one hand movernent. 4 Pupils are now ready to practise tracing in their Handwriting Books, using a pencil or pen. They trace ‘ver the grey lines, starting from the black dot. The third line of practice in each step gives the pupils @ chance to ‘copy the line of tracing above. The dots show pupils where to start each letter. 5. Encourage pupils to work slowiy and to think about their hand movements. Go round the class helping. Be positive otal times.
