SCHOOL PLACEMENT 1

2016/2017

Student: Brian Dunne

Class Observed: 3rd 4th 5th 6th

Date: 28th October 2016

Topic:

OBSERVATION
On placement, I had firsthand experience of rules
and routines in a
classroom most of the
rules applied at break
time and the teacher
reminded the pupils of
rules they may break
during this time this also
helped me to learn the
rules.
I also first-hand saw
routines where every
Friday the shop was open
and the kids got packed
lunches the packed
lunches were the
responsibility of one
student and the teacher
looked after the shop.

CRITICAL REFLECTION ON THE
OBSERVATION
As the shop was opened just before lunch some of
the students had bought lollipops so the teacher
reminded them that they were limited to 2 lollies and
they couldnt eat them outside also she reminded the
kids as they unpacked there lunches that drinks had
to stay outside the room it was good that the teacher
reminded them before they broke the rules. This
saved her having to give out to her students it also
made me feel more confident that I could do a good
job looking after the class as I knew the rules of the
class so I wouldnt be conflicting with the teachers
rules. It is essential, therefore, that rules are made
clear, known-even published-in a positive, workable
way (Bill Rogers 2007)(page30)
When I entered the classroom after being out with 5 th
and 6th class doing spelling tests, we saw one of the
girls placing lunch bags on each students desk each
week a local shop supplies packed lunches for the
students and it is one elected students role to give
out each lunch to the correct student at the start of
lunch this helps reduce all the students trying to get
there lunches at once and you can only get your
lunch if you are sitting down so it is very organised
and is a good routine to have the pupils in. Once all
the lunches were given out and the students were
sitting quietly the teacher called on each table to
come up one at a time to spend the coins they had
earned for good behaviour over the week. This was a
way of getting the students in the habit of saving and
is an incentive for good behaviour as messing before
or during the shop meant your table was last up
clearly, order is needed in the classroom if the

activities which take place are to facilitate effective
learning by pupils.(kvriacouq 1997)(page79)
