According to the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, Environmental Engineering is the

branch of engineering concerned with the application of scientific and engineering principles for
protection of human populations from the effects of adverse environmental factors; protection of
environments, both local and global, from the potentially deleterious effects of natural and human
activities; and improvement of environmental quality. Generally, it involves waste water
management, air pollution control, recycling, waste disposal, radiation protection, industrial hygiene,
environmental sustainability, public health and environmental engineering law. It also includes studies
on the environmental impact of proposed construction projects.
Currently, the world is seeing and will continue to see with all things being equal an
increase in the global population with a corresponding pressure to address the needs of
this geometrically growing global population. The pressure to address these needs has
resulted in an increased technological development which most times comes with its
associated environmental challenges. This hence calls for constant research and
sustainable management to avoid pollution and ecological damage.
