Discourse Community Map

For the discourse community map assignment we focused on obtaining all the
groups that Iron Man, the subject we used, was under. For the purpose of this assignment
we used three discourse communities that Iron Man would fall in this case, Alcoholic
Anonymous, Avengers ,and Stark Industries. We went in detailed for the Stark Industries
were we talked about the six main characteristics that a discourse community should have
in order to be one.
I feel quite accomplished with the result of this assignment. I figure out concepts
such as genre and lexis take part of our daily life as well with what we can associate with.
With this assignment I learned how a discourse community map is used. It can be used to
separate information regarding a specific group of a subject. The six characteristics help
identify a community as discourse and map it out to understand how it works better.
In the future could be applied to understand and identify discourse communities. We can
use this information to be able to understand or assimilate at a greater extend the group or
community that we will work with.
There is many different types of literacy that can be attached to one single subject.
The way we speak or write or interact with one another come into place when there is one
equal goal among a group or organization.
One of the requirements was to have a detail of all six characteristics of our chosen
group. I feel we went over all of them and gave all the required examples. To have made
my writing more effective I could have added more detail to the characteristics of the
discourse community to explain and give more meanings to the audience for them to have

a good understanding. One of the most helpful readings was The Concept of Discourse
Community by John Swales. It is great example to assimilate our activity to.
To conclude the new concepts learned such as genre and lexis will be used in the
future. The discourse community map is a great way to separate information to analyze
and understand a specific group goals and process of work.
