Astronomy Magnitude

What quantity is being reported?

Magnitude and brightness

What domain is common?

Brightness:

0.2976<x<-1.8755

Find/explain the formula.

X axis: Brightness
Y axis: Apparent magnitude
Absolute Magnitude Formula:

Apparent Magnitude Formula:

A = 4 d2

m2-m1 = -2.50 log(B2/B1)

M= -2.50log(b) - SADMOP
10^.08/-2.5 = b

Data Table

Vega

0.03

Capella

0.4786

0.08

What is the typical output range?

Apparent Magnitude: -26.72<x< 1.63

Why is a logarithmic scale appropriate?

Because star brightness is such a large value, unless you write it as a logarithm - so that we can undo an
exponent to make the values not crazy large numbers

Create one problem to solve that compares two different data points.

A new star is discovered, it is three times brighter than the star Capella. What is the apparent magnitude
of this new star?
