Crack The Case Four

Insufficient Accommodations
1. The accommodations that were made by the Park were not
completely equal. While the Park did offer other options to
visitors who were disabled, the difference between being inside
watching a video and going on a hike outside, is very large and
certainly not the same thing at all. Another accommodation the
Park could have made would have been to give an option that
allowed those who could not participate in the hikes to
participate in hands on activities that are inside, but have an
exhibit set up like the trail that visitors with disabilities to interact
with. Another way for the Park to ensure that all visitors can go
on the trail is by providing some form of transportation, i.e. a golf
cart.
2. Ms. Thurston does have a responsibility to ensure that all her
students are able to get the most out of the experience and
needs to do everything she can in order to make sure that her
whole class can remain together for as long as they can. If there
is no way for Justin to go on the hike, Ms. Thurston may just have
to say that all the students will watch the movie. If she cannot do
either of these things, it may be wiser to find a different activity
that all students can fully participate in.
3. One thing Ms. Thurston can do is turning the situation into a
teachable moment. By telling her students that they have a
dilemma, and then explain that Justin cannot go on the hike, she
can allow her students to take a stand for their classmate and
problem solve for what they could do to help Justin participate.
Not only does this help the students learn that there are unfair
situations, but it also creates a bond between them as they work
together.
4. If there was no possible way for Justin to participate in the hike,
Ms. Thurston should either make all her students watch the
movie together or she should stay with Justin, and find
something for him to do outside while the other students go on
the hike. By doing this, not only would she give her students the
same sort of experience, but she is also showing them (and the
other adults) that she wasnt going to stand for the unfair
treatment of a student.
