Who am I?
After talking to my mother and father, I am beginning to gain a large interest in my
culture. My mother is from Taiwan, but she told me the story that my ancestors came over on
ships due war and a Chinese leader named Mao Zedong turned the country to a communist
regime .The opposing party called the Nationalist Party went on ships to Taiwan. My father was
born in Malaysia and his ancestors migrated from China for tin mining. Nevertheless, as he grew
up there was mixture of three different cultures being Chinese, Indian, and Malay. Therefore,
there was a large racial divide. My father told me story that he has asked his mother about. He
was around two years old and there was a civil war occurring between the Chinese and Malay.
They were disputing over the territory and government rule. Continuing on, when he was still a
baby him and his older sister had to go hide in the jungle because of the war. Even though he
does not remember that memory, I thought it was very interesting listening to that story. Through
talking to my parents, I have found things out that I have never known before and I want to
continue digging through my history to be able to understand the life back then. I can only
imagine what it was like back then. It still amazes that I have never asked these questions before
or have taken any interest in where I came from. However, I am becoming more and more
interested in learning where I came from. I want to know more about my parents childhood
mostly and want to continue to discover things about my grandparents because I never really met
mom father since he left her at a young age.
