o 18th Century
- Several of the women in the American Revolution were used for a sexual
purpose toward the troops
- Believed to keep troop morale high
o 19th Century
- Brothels tailored toward upper class men
- Over 200 Brothels in Lower Manhattan
- Vagrancy laws prohibited prostitution but police and other officials were
bribed
- 75% of Men in New York had some type of STD
- 1875 - US bans prostitution immigration
o 20th Century
- More regulation; the White-Slave Traffic Act
- Mortensen vs. United States prostitutes can travel across states borders if
the purpose wasnt prostitution
- 1911- Hoke vs. United States delegated power to the states to regulate
prostitution themselves
- 1916- 47 cities closed red-light districts
- 1980s major spread of AIDS caused prostitution to be focused on as a
public health issue
