My Classroom
These last couple of months have taught me a lot on how to organize and hold a
classroom space. I can facilitate a class with ease and students can explore how their minds
create and work as well as integrate what they learn form meaning making into their lives. I
have enjoyed reading many articles on teaching methods and familiarizing myself with teaching
standards. My conclusion is that I will take this knowledge that I have been given and with my
conceptual mind bring bits and pieces of information together to teach a classroom of students
to the best of my ability. Pink (2005) explains this very well in the chapter Symphony when he
talks about people bringing ideas from different areas of study to form a new idea.
The Big Picture of a classroom is that each student will comprehend a lesson differently
than their neighbor. When they share their experiences they become aware how others
patterns of thought can be relative to their own. Also, they can learn how to build an idea from
others ideas and vice versa. Dorn (1994) made some helpful comment that Art Education
should be a disciplinary study. Students should be taught about art history so they can critically
analyze aesthetics as well as learn about comparison and diverse opinion (Dorn 1994 p15). His
views are traditional but valuable because it creates a strong foundation for an idea to be born
and mature. Pink puts emphasis on the left side of the brain and Dorn puts emphasis on the
logical right side of the brain. I think it is valuable for everyone to learn how to use both sides of
the brain and let them work together to the best of their ability so ideas can flow and manifest.
