Intro
a. Throughout playing football I have been involved in a variety of
discourse communities. These communities have similarities between
them but there are also great differences. The quarterback discourse
community is one of the smallest communities among football players.
2. Method
a. Discourse Communities
i. Football Players
1. Play the same sport
ii. Team that I played for
1. Everyone played for the same team
iii. Offense
1. Try to score
2. Play as a unit
3. Work together
iv. Skill Players
1. The offensive players that touch the ball the most and
typically are the most athletic players on the field
v. Quarterbacks
1. All quarterbacks have similar qualities such as leadership,
poise, confidence, and quick decision making.
2. All quarterbacks develop a strong understanding of
football regarding both sides of the ball. (offense and
defense)
b. There are numerous discourse communities when it involves football
players. Each community has different characteristics when it comes to
the group and the ones involved in the group.
3. Results
a. When I made my list of discourse communities that I was involved in,
the further down the list that you go, the more specialized the
communities become. For example anyone can be a football player,
but not everyone can be a skill player.
4. Analysis
a. Quarterbacks have to be a different type of player
b. This makes the discourse community much more noticeable within the
sport
i. There are certain stigmas that all quarterbacks poses.
c. Typically the smartest players on the field
d. Typically the most athletic person on the field
i. They have to do the most and they touch the ball on every play

5. Discussion
a. Talk about how there are differences between the discourse
communities that I was involved in. Every community that I was in was
more specialized than the community before it and had a different
degree of language that was involved with each group.
