How Poverty Affects Obesity: Annotated Bibliography

Adam Drewnowski draws on and summarizes the findings on many research


studies conducted on the link between poverty and obesity. The article, written for and
published by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, provides an extensive and
detailed outlook on poverty and the affects of it on food and the body. The article
gives a mostly scientific outlook on the issue. The article does focus on the scientific
aspect of the issue, but it also given vital information about cultural and financial facts
as well. The article does find a significant link between poverty and high rates of
obesity, which is consistent with my other sources.

James A Levine wrote this article for the American Diabetes Journal and it was
subsequently published and distributed The American Diabetes Association. Levine
draws upon many studies that have been done about the link between poverty and
obesity. He details studies that have found a correlation between counties in the U.S.
that have high obesity rates and fall below the poverty line. The article also provides
details into the physical fitness habits of people living in impoverished areas and
describes the link between lack of exercise and high poverty rates. The article does
find a significant link between poverty and obesity that is consistent with my other
sources.

Kevin Voigt wrote this article for a website called NerdWallet, which is a lifestyle
and financial website. The information in the article is based on studies done by the

U.S. Census Bureau and stateofobesity.com. This study contains research on the 10
fattest states, the 10 slimmest and the poverty rates between them. The research also
contains information on food deserts and access to healthy food. The information and
findings in this article are consistent with my other sources.
