Wabash River Enhancement Corporation Receives Major Award from the Hoosier
Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society
LAFAYETTE, Ind., (Dec. 2, 2016)On November 10th, the Wabash River Enhancement
Corporation received an award from the Hoosier Chapter of the Soil and Water
Conservation Society. This year, WREC received the Conservation Group Award.
The purpose of the Conservation Group Award is to recognize the outstanding
conservation accomplishments of a specific group or industry or business whose
activities have resulted in improving the quality of the environment by directed efforts to
advance science and art of good land use according to the HCSWCS. Any business,
group or industry was eligible for this award.
The Wabash River Enhancement Corporation was nominated for the award by Lindsey
Payne, a Purdue University Associate Professor. WREC was then received the award
from Susanna Hinds and the HCSWCS at the annual fall meeting on November 17th at
the Indianapolis Zoo.
The Wabash River Enhancement Corporation has made a significant decrease of the
amount of pollutants going into the Wabash River. Sedimentation loading has been
reduced by 20,202.43 pounds. Phosphorus loading has been reduced by 274,016.03
pounds. Nitrates have been reduced by 695,557.36 pounds.
WREC looks to improve the conditions of the Wabash River in the coming years
following their multiple projects.
The Wabash River Enhancement Corporation is a not-for-profit agency that was formed
in 2004 to guide enhancement of the Wabash River corridor. WREC began operations in
2005. Its mission is to: enhance the quality of life in the Wabash River Corridor by
providing sustainable opportunities to improve health, recreation, education, economic
development, and environmental management.
