Seor and seora Prez are on vacation with their

and seor Rodrguez introduce themselves. Then
seor Prez introduces his family. Listen and connect
the expressions they use to greet each other.
CARLOS PREZ: Hola, buenas tardes! Soy Carlos Prez. (Good

Page 7, Actividad uno (Activity 1)

Seor Prez then introduced his family. He did this

two different ways. First he said:
Le presento a... (I introduce you to...)

Berlitz Publishing/APA Publications GmbH & Co. Verlag KG Singapore Branch, Singapore

Listen and repeat:

Le presento a mi familia.

Listen to these names of nationalities and make up

simple sentences, for example:
ingls (English, male)
Soy ingles. (Im English. male)

And then he said:

sta es mi seora.

or

This is my wife.

ste
ste es
ste es mi hijo.

inglesa (English, female)

Soy inglesa. (Im English, female)
espaol / espaola (Spanish)
mexicano / mexicana (Mexican)
americano / americana (American)
francs / francesa (French)
australiano / australiana (Australian)
irlands / irlandesa (Irish)
escocs / escocesa (Scottish)
gals / galesa (Welsh)

This is my son. Repeat:

Page 8, Actividad dos (Activity 2)

sta es

This is
sta es mi seora.

When he introduces his son seor Prez uses the

masculine form of this:

ste es mi hijo.

There are other ways to say pleased to meet you in

Spanish. Seora Prez says:

Seor Marcos introduces you to several people. Greet

them as you think is correct.

You can also say:

ste es el seor Martnez. (This is Mr. Martnez.)

Le presento a la seora Cubel. (Let me introduce you to Mrs.
Cubel.)
sta es mi hija Mara. (This is my daughter Mara.)
Le presento a mi mujer Marta. (I introduce you to my wife
Marta.)

Mucho gusto!

Now its your turn to introduce these people.

Repeat:

El seor Martnez (Mr. Martnez)

La seorita Ruz (Ms. Ruz)
Mi hijo Juan (My son Juan)
La seora Garcs (Mrs. Garcs)
Mi hija Isabel (My daughter Isabel)
Mi mujer Ana (My wife Ana)

Encantada!

But her son uses the masculine form:

Encantado!

Mucho gusto!

When seor Rodrguez speaks to Pedro he uses a less

formal greeting:
Qu tal?

How is it going?
Listen and repeat:

Page 9, Actividad cuatro (Activity 4)

Qu tal?

Two young people meet. Because they are very

young they use the less formal:

To say where he and his son are from seor Prez

says:

t (you).

Mi hijo y yo somos de Barcelona.

Did you guess what somos means? It means we

are and is the plural form of soy, I am that you
already learned. Listen and repeat:
Somos

Then seor Rodrguez asks seora Prez:

Cul es su nacionalidad?

Thats right! It means whats your nationality?

Listen and repeat:
Cul es su nacionalidad?

PEDRO: Qu tal? Soy Pedro. Cmo te llamas? (Hi! Im

Pedro. Whats your name?)

Just a moment. Its 10 oclock.)
MARA: Oh vale! Cul es tu nmero de telfono? (OK.

PEDRO: El cinco cinco cinco uno cinco uno cero. (55 51 510)

Did you recognize the differences in the t form?

Mira, el gazpacho es un plato muy tpico, especialmente del sur

pimientos, pepino, cebolla, ajo, pan, aceite de oliva, vinagre y
sal. (Gazpacho is a very typical dish, especially in South of
Spain. Its very easy to make. Its like a vegetable soup, but its
cold. To prepare gazpacho you need tomatoes, peppers,
cucumber, onion, garlic, bread, olive oil, vinegar and salt.

La tortilla de patata, o tortilla espaola, es muy fcil. Necesitas

patatas, cebolla y huevos. Nada ms! (The potato omelet, or
Spanish omelet, is very easy. You need olive oil very
important: it must be olive oil! potatoes, onion, and eggs.

La ensalada mixta puedes hacerla de maneras muy diferentes y

lechuga, tomate, olivas o aceitunas verdes y negras, cebolla,
sal, aceite y vinagre. Tambin puedes aadir pepino, atn,
pimiento, huevo duro: depende de lo que te guste. (You can
prepare a mixed salad in many different ways and using
different ingredients. But the basic one has: lettuce, tomatoes,
green or black olives, onion, salt, oil and vinegar. You can also
add cucumber, tuna fish, peppers, and boiled eggs it depends
on what you like.)

Page A4, Actividad dos (Activity 2)

Youve got some recipes for sangra, paella, and

empanadillas from a magazine. But your friend
Carlos says he has his own way of preparing these
dishes. Can you tell what the differences are?
La sangra la preparo con un litro de vino tinto y un litro de
refresco de limn. Pongo fruta en trocitos, naranja y limn.
Tambin pongo una lata de melocotones en almbar, pero no
pongo azcar, ni coac ni otro tipo de alcohol, slo vino.
(I prepare sangra with one liter of red wine and one liter of
lemonade. I put in fruit orange and lemon cut in small
pieces. I also put in a can of peaches but I dont put in sugar
or brandy or any other kind of alcohol, just wine.)
La paella la preparo con arroz, verduras y pollo. No me gusta
la paella con pescado. (I prepare the paella with rice,
vegetables, and chicken. I dont like paella with fish.)
Las empanadillas no me gustan de cerdo: prefiero las
empanadillas de atn y las preparo con cebolla, tomate, ajo,
aceite de oliva, sal y atn. (I dont like pork empanadillas. I
prefer empanadillas with tuna, and I prepare them with
onions, tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, salt, and tuna fish.)

Page A5, Actividad tres (Activity 3)

Now listen to Luis, a waiter in a famous Spanish

caf. He talks about coffee and the different types
that Spaniards drink. Do you recognize any?
En Espaa tomamos mucho caf. Los espaoles toman caf a
todas horas y de muchas maneras diferentes. Se toma caf
solo, que es como el caf expreso. Tambin hay caf con leche
y cortado. Un cortado es un caf solo, o expreso, con un
poco de leche, pero muy poco. Si prefieres el caf ms suave,
tambin hay caf largo, que es caf solo pero con ms agua.
Un carajillo es caf solo con cognac o ans. En el verano son
muy populares el granizado, que es caf helado, y el caf con
hielo. En muchas cafeteras tambin sirven blanco y negro, que
es caf con helado de nata o vainilla. Ya digo: tenemos
muchas maneras de tomar el caf!

(In Spain we drink a lot of coffee. The Spanish have coffee at

any time of the day and in many different ways. You can drink
black coffee, which is like an espresso. There is also coffee
with milk and cortado. A cortdado is coffee with very little
milk. If you prefer weaker coffee, there is also the long coffee,
which is black coffee made with more water. A carajillo is
black coffee with brandy or anise liqueur. Very popular in the
summer is granizado, which is frozen coffee, and coffee with
ice. In many cafs they also serve black and white; that is a
coffee with vanilla ice cream. As I told you before there are
many ways to have coffee.)

And this is the end of the Extra section for Unit 2.

To say that you would like to speak to someone, you

can say:

Quisiera hablar con el seor Contreras.

The first thing he asked them was if they spoke

Spanish and he used the plural form of the verb
again. Listen and repeat:
Hablan ustedes espaol?

The secretary asks who is calling.

and they answered:

De parte de quin?

Hablamos espaol.

The students speaks for himself and his friends, so he

The next question is also in the plural:

We are students.
Listen and repeat:

Pronunciation

In Spanish the letter H is not pronounced. Listen:

hola; hijo; hermano

sound exactly the same. There are some parts of

Latin America however where V is pronounced as it
is in English.
Vaquero; viudo

Listen to these dialogs and concentrate on the way

the H is not pronounced and the way the V sounds:
MRS. HERRERA: Tiene hijos seor Vera? (Do you have
children Mr Vera?)
MR. VERA: S, tengo un hijo y una hija. Y usted, seora
Herrera? (Yes, I have a son and a daughter.
And you, Mrs. Herrera?)
MRS. HERRERA: No tengo hijos, soy viuda y vivo con mi
hermano que est divorciado. (I dont have
children, Im a widow. I live with my brother
who is divorced.)
VICTOR: Hola Hector! ste es mi novio, Vctor. (Hi
Hector. This is my boyfriend, Vctor.)
HECTOR: Hola, Vctor. Vives en Valencia? (Hi Vctor,
do you live in Valencia?)
VICTOR: No, vivo en Nueva York. (No, I live in New
York.)
HECTOR: Hablas ingls? (Do you speak English?)
VICTOR: S, claro, hablo ingls. (Yes, of course I speak
English.)
HECTOR: Trabajas en Nueva York? (Do you work in
New York?)
VICTOR: S. (Yes.)
HECTOR: Qu haces? (What do you do?)
VICTOR: Soy mdico en un hospital. (Im a doctor in a
hospital.)

Next listen to these sentences and repeat them:

With V and B:
No tengo novio. (I dont have a boyfriend.)
Estoy divorciado. (Im divorced.)
Bebo vino en un bar. (Im drinking wine in a bar.)
Vivimos en Barcelona. (We live in Barcelona.)
Brbara es viuda. (Brbara is a widow.)
Tengo veinte aos. (Im 20 years old.)

With H:
Mi hermano toma helado. (My brother is eating ice cream.)
Hola, hijo. (Hi, son!)
Mi hija est en el hospital. (My daughter is in the hospital.)
Mi hermana no habla ingls. (My sister doesnt speak English.)
Hasta maana, hija. (See you tomorrow, daughter!)

Well done! Now go to the Extra section!

The letter V is often pronounced like B is Spanish.

Therefore it may be impossible to know which one to
write. For example:
Vaquero

and
Baquero

To say something is closed you can say:

Est cerrado.

The museum is open all day from 10 am

Extra, Unit 4

Pronunciation

Page A9, Actividad uno (Activity 1)

In certain cases the Spanish consonants C and Z

are pronounced in the same way.
c + e as in

Listen to Saras explanation of schedules in Spain. Fill

in the spaces in the book with the information she
provides.

centro

c + i as in
cine

z + a as in
plaza

z + o as in
zona

z + u as in
zumo

The same sound can occur at the end of a word. In

that case it is spelled with a Z as in
diez

or
Prez

These sounds are pronounced two different ways in

the Hispanic world. In Spain they sound similar to a
strong English TH. In the south of Spain and most
Latin American countries they sound like S. Listen
to the same examples read by someone from the
north of Spain:
centro; cine; plaza; zona; zumo

And now listen to the same words read by someone

from Latin America:
centro; cine; plaza; zona; zumo

However you choose to pronounce this sound you

should get used to hearing both. Listen to this dialog,
which takes place in northern Spain, and repeat:
Por favor, est cerca el centro de la ciudad? (Is the city center
near here, please?)
S, est muy cerca. Ve la plaza al final de la calle? All hay un
gran centro comercial. Pues cruce la plaza y despus tuerza en
la tercera calle a la izquierda. El centro de la ciudad est all:
est a cinco minutos. (Yes, its very close. Do you see the
square at the end of the street? There is a big shopping center.
Cross the square and then turn the third street left. The city
center is there; its five minutes from here.)
Muchas gracias. (Thank you very much.)

Look at the unit again and read out loud, in the way
you prefer, all the words that have the sounds studied
here. And now, for more practice, go to the Extra
section.

WOMAN: Sara, puedes decirme qu horarios tienen los

bancos? (Sara, can you tell me what the schedules
for the banks are?)
SARA: Pues generalmente el horario para el pblico es de
nueve a dos. Los sbados cierran antes, a la una.
Pero depende del banco. Pero hoy domingo estn
cerrados, claro. (Usually they are open from 9 to 2.
Saturdays they close earlier, at 1. But it depends on
the bank. But today, Sunday, they are closed, of
course!)
WOMAN: Y las tiendas? (And the stores?)
SARA: Las tiendas abren de lunes a sbado, por la maana
abren a las nueve y media o las diez y cierran a la
una, o una y media. Y por la tarde abren a las
cuatro y media o las cinco y cierran a las ocho.
(Stores are open from Monday to Saturday. In the
morning they open at 9:30 or 10 and close at 1 or
1:30. And in the afternoon they open at 4:30 or 5
and close at 8.)
WOMAN: Y las farmacias? Hay farmacias abiertas hoy? (And
pharmacies? Are the pharmacies open today?)
SARA: Pues el domingo estn tambin cerradas, pero hay
farmacias de guardia para urgencias que estn
abiertas hasta muy tarde o toda la noche. El resto
de la semana las farmacias tienen el mismo horario
que las tiendas, de nueve y media a ocho. (They
are also closed on Sundays but in emergencies there
are some pharmacies that are open until very late
or all night. The rest of the week, pharmacies have
the same opening hours as stores, from 9:30 to 8.)

Did you understand all that? Clothing words are new

here, and so are colors. For example: he asks if she

Me gustan los pantalones.
Me gustan mucho.

Then they talked about clothing sizes:

A talla (size)

The woman asked:

Qu talla usa?

and Fernando replied:

La cuarenta.

Berlitz Publishing/APA Publications GmbH & Co. Verlag KG Singapore Branch, Singapore

When he wanted the shirt in a larger size he said:

La quiero ms grande.

Once you decide to buy something you can say:

Of course, if you are talking about a feminine noun

or a plural you will not use lo.
With, for instance,

you would say:

Me la quedo

with
los pantalones vaqueros (jeans)

youd say:
Me los quedo.

with
las faldas negras (black skirts)

youd say:

If you want to pay with a credit card, youll need to

where she can find the things she wants.

Berlitz Publishing/APA Publications GmbH & Co. Verlag KG Singapore Branch, Singapore

The salespeople use two different ways to ask the

Pronunciation

How the consonant R is pronounced depends on

where it is in a word. If it is at the very beginning the
sound is strong and rolled:
ropa; rebajas; reducido

Berlitz Publishing/APA Publications GmbH & Co. Verlag KG Singapore Branch, Singapore

AudioscriptVEC31

If it is in the middle of a word, between two vowels,

the sound is softer and is not rolled:
quiero; zanahoria; parece; claro; caro; vaqueros

In some cases, however, the strong, rolled sound can

occur between two vowels. In that case it is written
with a double R:

Merced, famous because everything is very inexpensive. Like

many tourists, I like handcrafts from the markets. Sometimes
there are vendors who come from other parts of Mexico and
have very traditional and beautiful things made of clay,
leather, sometimes even musical instruments like flutes, guitars,
and maracas.)

barra; marrn

Page A11, Actividad dos (Activity 2)

If the R is in the middle of a word between a

consonant and a vowel, or a vowel and a consonant, or
if it at the end of a word, the R is rolled. But it will be
softer than it would be at the beginning of the word:

Listen to five people talking about what they want to

buy. Which of the items in the ads do you think each
of these people should buy?

mercado; azcar; grande; litro

Listen and repeat the following sentences:

Compro una raqueta roja, reducida, en las rebajas. (Ill buy a
red jacket on sale.)
Quiero un sombrero amarillo oscuro. (I want a dark yellow hat.)
El abrigo marrn es ms barato que el rojo. (The brown coat is
cheaper than the red one.)

place and write the number of the dialog under the
illustration of that place.

Your turn. What would you say in the following
situations?
1

Ask someone where plaza Garca is.

Ask if it possible for you to get there by walking.
Ask if it is necessary to take the bus.
Ask where the bus stop is.

Did you notice a new way to say must or have to? In

these dialogs you heard someone use the expression:

En la estacin de tren
(At the train station)

Hay que....

In this section we will talk about making train

reservations.

...a more general expression that means It is

necessary or Is it necessary? Listen and repeat:

If you plan to use the bus to get around you will

probably want to buy an abono, a ticket that can be
used more then once. Be sure you know how many
trips or how long you can use it for. Listen and repeat:
Para cuntos viajes sirve?

A small one. The employee offers a choice of cars

with three and five doors.
Seor Ruiz says:

Un Citron grande, de cinco puertas.

The first person also asked if she could return the car
at the airport.
Puedo devolver el coche en el aeropuerto?

The clerk responds:

Tiene que ser de cinco.

S, claro.

And then he asks how much it costs:

Yes, of course! The second person wanted to know if

the gas was included in the price.

Cunto cuesta el Renault?

Est incluida la gasolina en el precio?

and she responds:

Cuarenta y tres euros por da.

The employee asks for his drivers license and his

Unfortunately,
La gasolina no est incluida en el precio.

Pronunciation

Listen to these three conversations at a gas station.

Can you understand what kind of gas each person
wants? How much it costs? What else do they want?

In Spanish the double LL, the ll is pronounced as

one consonant. The pronunciation, however, varies in
different parts of Spain and Latin America. It also
varies from person to person and individuals may
pronounce it differently in different situations.
Traditionally it is pronounced

1
Dnde est la gasolina sin plomo, por favor? (Where is
unleaded gas, please?)
All, un momento. (Over there, just a moment.)
Pngame sesenta euros. Puede darme un recibo? (60. Could
you give me a receipt?)
S, puedo. Un momento. (Yes, just a moment.)

ll

as in:
billete

2
Lleno, por favor. (Fill it up, please.)
Sper? (Premium?)
S, y puede tambin comprobar el aceite? (Yes. And could you
also check the oil?)
Vale. Son sesenta euros. (OK. Its 60.)

but it is more commonly pronounced like a Y as in:

3
Gasleo? (Diesel?)
S. Pngame noventa euros. (Yes, for 90.)
Ah,... Son noventa y dos. (Oh,... Its 92.)
Vale, est bien. Puede limpiar el parabrisas? (Its OK. Could
you clean the windshield?)

Did you understand the first person? He wants

unleaded gas.

and

lleno

Therefore the pronunciation of:

LL

and
is essentially the same.
In some Latin American countries, notably
Argentina, the pronunciation of:
LL

Gasolina sin plomo.

The second one asked for sper:

is the same and it is strong, for example:

All est la llave. (The key is over there.)

Sper

which means high octane, and the third one wants:

gasleo

which is diesel fuel. One way to say how much gas

you want is by saying how much money you want
to spend.
Pngame noventa euros.

Another way is to ask for a full tank.

Lleno por favor.

All three asked for some sort of extra service: could

you give me a receipt?

Notice how the ll is pronounced in these dialogs:

Un billete para Valladolid por favor. Tengo que reservar un
asiento? (A ticket to Valladolid, please. Do I need to reserve a
seat?)
No, el tren no va lleno. (No, the train is not full.)
Hay un taller aqu? (Is there a garage around here?)
No, pero hay un taller al final de la calle. (No, but there is a
garage at the end of the street.)
Por all? (That way?)
S, s, por all. (Yes, that way.)

This is the end of Unit 6. And now, lets have some

extra practice!

Puede darme el recibo?

Could you check the oil?

Puede comprobar el aceite?

Could you clean the windshield?

Puede limpiar el parabrisas?

Listen to the description about traffic in Mexico City.

(The Federal District is very large; it has more than 20
millions residents. There are many buses and the subway is
very efficient. However, one needs more than one hour to
travel from one point to another. Thats why those who can
afford it buy a car to get to work or school faster. Traffic is
very heavy and there is a lot of pollution. In recent years the
authorities have established a very simple system to resolve
the problem of air pollution. Every car gets a transfer in a
certain color; in this way cars are not allowed to be driven
from 6 am to 10 pm according to their color: yellow for
Mondays, pink for Tuesdays, red for Wednesdays, green for
Thursdays, and blue for Fridays. Saturdays and Sundays all
cars are allowed to be driven.)
