Case: Process Control at Polaroid

This case describes the implementation of a statistical process control program at

Polaroid. It identifies the problems other than just the technical ones.
Questions:
1. What is your evaluation of Project Greenlight? Consider your opinions in (A) the
workforce involved, and (B) the way SPC is conducted in the system. Is the current
process in control? You may use the data in Exhibit 5 to support your analysis.
2. Why are the defect types identified by the operators and auditors so different? Who is
right? What causes this difference?
3. What actions should Mr. Rolfs take to improve upon the current situation and make it
better? Consider factors such as workforce acceptance, customer acceptance, cost,
quality, etc. in evaluating the options.
